Upgrading/building a gaming PC

Hello, I have an old PC that was made around 2009 and Id like to build a new gaming PC, Although as my budget isnt that high I thought it might be better to use some of my other pc parts until I can improve them. Although I hardly know much about how PC building goes so id like some help.
For my build I mostly want it to run games at a good level (like overwatch and similar games)

the old PC
CPU: intel core i7-860 2.8GHz
Motherboard : intel dp55wg
RAM : 4GB DDR3 (takes up 2 slots), Although the PC is running I do get an error often that says "memory management" and after some research I think my ram isnt working correctly?
Graphics card: nvidia geforce gtx 960
Storage: 2 1tb WDC-WD10EADS-00L5B1
Power supply: coolmax cug-950B

Any help is appreciated :)

It would really vary to how much you can spend without breaking the bank and having an over draft fee the next morning.
Ram you will want to go by here and see what works best as stated by intel engineers.

PSU you could upgrade to that and when your finally ready to get rid of your old parts it'll still be usable for a newer build.

Cleaning off your old thermal paste and applying this to it will help for awhile unless you oc which is unlikely on that mobo.

So my main question right now is, Wouldnt it be better if I changed the motherboard as well, Im sure most newer RAM and other parts wouldnt work with an old motherboard/CPU but then again my knowledge is limited, So how important is it to change the motherboard/Cpu?
I wouldnt mind waiting a few weeks or months to get my budget for those 3 parts to 800$ So if it is better to change them, I think motherboards are the thing I understand the least as there are many types with no differences in specs to someone like me and thanks for the replay!

Yes, if you are willing to save $800 for a new platform, I would go that route. Your current rig is really long in the tooth and that platform is really aged. Upgrading the CPU on that platform wouldn't improve your results enough to warrant the efforts. $800 is plenty for a platform upgrade and some of that money could go towards storage and maybe even graphics upgrade. The first thing you would need to do is decide on a platform (AMD Ryzen or Intel Core). From there you can choose your MB, RAM, and processor that fits your needs and budget.

Thanks for the reply, I might've made a small mistake in changing currency and maybe 800 is a bit of a stretch, setting the budget to 400-550 is more like it

So with that budget in mind, solely for the motherboard CPU and RAM, I'll gradually upgrade the rest but I think I want to go all-out with my small budget on the main components

The ram I might be able to figure out but id really appreciate a few recommendations on the CPU/Mobo

For AMD, I would look at the Ryzen 3 1200, 1300X, or Ryzen 5 1400. As for the MB, the ASRock AB350 Pro looks to be a solid choice. https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157761

For Intel, I would look at i3 8100 or the i5 8400. The 8400 is out of stock and may be for a while. As for the MB, options are expensive as you are stuck with the Z series board right now. Though a quick look on Newegg shows them as cheap as $115 which isn't too bad.

If this were my money and my sole purpose was gaming, I would go for the i5 8400. You will get more for your money with the Ryzen out of the box, plus overclocking the Ryzen is easily possible. As for memory, I would get 2400mhz or faster (verify compatibility with the MB manufacture) with a minimum of 8GB (I'd go with 16GB and be set for a while). All options will be a huge upgrade from what you have now. Good luck and have fun!

Thank you for your replay, You and another person have suggested almost the same parts so the parts im planning to get right now are
AMD - Ryzen 5 1600
AsRock AB350 Pro4
As for the RAM both of you recommended 16GB but I might only buy 8 for now and upgrade it soon, So I think I'll go with the Corsair - Vengeance LPX 8GB DDR4-2400

Thank you so much for your help and helping me choose these parts :)
