uTorrent update selectively installs cryptocurrency mining software without notice

Hmm I use utorrent and have been ignoring the pop ups to upgrade good thing I did. I will continue to ignore it and stick with the previous version!

Yeah, the second they started adding ads in I stopped updating it (years ago). Don't need that stuff...

Second that. Or switch to Deluge. No spyware, miners, or other crapware from closedsource sketchy programs. Just open-source quality made by the people for the people.

Deluge lack the bells and whistles of its competitors, not to mention it doesn't always download anything. I'll stick with Vuze, the king of BitTorrent clients.

By the way, open-source and quality? That's an oxymoronic statement if I've ever heard one.

I still use Utorrent 2.2.1 which is per my research the best version out there. I think you can still find
it on file hippo or something. Set it never to upgrade and you are good 2 go!!
Super stable, light weight and no ads!!

Have there been any articles about BitTorrent having this miner?
I was wondering the same thing. To be honest, I'm suspecting a download site (I'll go ahead and point a finger at CNet, even if I'm wrong) has packaged the bitcoin miner, outside of Bittorrent/uTorrent publishers control.

Could be them, but I think uTorrent approved of it. They recently responded to the allegations and said that they partnered with the software because it was for a good cause. Guess we'll just have click slowly and carefully when updating/installing either torrent softwares

A long long time ago in an internet far away, was Utorrent 1.6.1. After this build, a lil community I was in, warned against uTorrent's latest, due to the installation, or inclusion shall we say ( as you had an installer or a simple run file version ) filled with spyware / adware, which you do not want.

Personally I have had both versions of 1.6 to hand ever since, and never used a later build, and just regarded it as a program for the uninformed sheeple. qBittorrent seems quite nice though.

I also am using 1.6 on those rare occasions I do use it. Think last time was to get the Dayz mod, breaking point or the other one, A3Launcher, can't remember which.

Utorrent used to be awesome a few years ago: very small and doing exactly what it needs to do. Now I have switched to deluge. Deluge is what utorrent used to be.

uTorrent still does what it used to, and more. I'm currently using version 3.4.2, and the one single ad (ad for uTorrent Plus) doesn't bother me.

I haven't had any bad luck with the installer installing additional programs. It's hard to blame an Installer when the users lack of comprehension for what they are doing while clicking next for everything during the install process (I'm pointing a finger at my father here).

Unlike Microsoft Security Essentials lack of user control on keeping Windows Update settings the way they are. Everytime MSSE is installed, the user would would have to manually go back to Windows Update and change settings to never download or install if that is what they wish. MSSE changes Windows Update to automatic every time, without regard to user desire. In fact MS is doing hundreds of things without regard to user desire. But yet here we are pointing a finger at the little guy that makes nothing on every computer sale. Damn what is wrong with our priorities?

I stopped using Utorrent on my PC, I am now using Transmission which is an add-on app that's offered to anyone who own a Qnap NAS... And the beauty of it, it's all web-based and no client side installation required.

I went to tixati torrent program no spyware or ad ware if you remember winmx its made by the same people
it is decentralized so safer also.
