I want to set up web camera so that I can chat with my grandchildren. They have a Mac system, I have Windows XP Pro, SP2, Dell Dimension 4600 with 1.5GB RAM. What should I look for in terms of hardware and software? My research so far suggests that cost does not necessarily guarantee quality and reliability. I am not looking for the cheapest way of doing this but the best quality for the money. I am not that tech savvy either so I would like to find something that requires a minumum of fuss to set up and run. Thanks for your help.

I recommend this Logitech webcam. I know that it is a bit of $$$, but the quality of the video is great.

As far as software, I suggest you download Skype, which is free and easy to setup.
