What does Sleep mode do?

On my Vista laptop I was going to reboot it when I accidentally clicked on Sleep. It shut down & rather than googling to find out how to wake it up, I pulled the power cord out & removed the battery for a few seconds & plugged it back in & put the battery in & booted it up. I was unable to get to my home page in FF but could get in here to TS. Simple question, what happens when a laptop is put to sleep? :)

Sleep mode saves the session to RAM (which doesn't need much power to run) and turns off pretty much everything else. USB power and RAM is still powered. The power light should be blinking.

Either press a mouse/key or press the power button, and it'll turn on super-quick to where you left off.

On a laptop, you can configure the action taken when you close the lid;
Nothing, Sleep or Hibernate.
To resume form either of the last two, you just tap the power-on key and you will get a window
Resuming Windows.

Yes, I think you told me that in another thread some time ago, I just kinda panicked when I clicked sleep mode accidently. Thank you. :)
