What kind of RAM to get for upgrade

I'm looking to add or replace existing RAM. I have an ASUS P8Z68-V LE motherboard. It has 8GB of DDR3 pc3-10700h (667MHz). While that seems slow by today's standards, from what I red there isn't noticeable difference between 1600Mhz vs 1866Mhz though I guess there would be from 667MHz?

In terms of comparability, as long as it's DDR3 is it going to be compatible? Or are there other specs I need to compare?

The reason I'm looking to upgrade is sometimes virtual machines can't start because there isn't enough memory when I've got other programs open.
 
No that memory is not supported, check the pdf file for recommended memory by asus.

Crucial memory might not be 'on' the list, but Kingmax, as an example, use Micron chips in their DRAM modules (branded under their own name); Kingston DRAM modules use SK Hynix chips; Corsair tends to use Samsung or SK Hynix chips, depending on the model.

Anyway, Crucial do produce memory modules for that particular motherboard:
