Which Budget Ryzen 5 CPU is Best for PC Gaming?

Wow.. Compiling shaders on a hexa-core is painful. I can't even imagine the suffering of those who use quad-cores.

Just upgraded my I5 3340 pc to a Ryzen 5 5500. I got it for a killer deal. I was looking at the 8400F and the 7600, as both of their prices have dropped significantly, but the motherboard was double the price of my AM4 motherboard. I would still settle for the 7600, though, as I am not keen on either Intel or AMD F series.

The 8400F exists as a way for AMD to get some value out of Ryzen 8000 series mobile dice that have a defective iGPU. The 8400F, like all the 8000 series and all Ryzen chips ending in G, is a mobile chip thrown into a desktop package. The chip's limitations come from that; lower PCIe speed to keep down power consumption, fewer PCIe lanes, lower boost clock, and less L3 cache to keep down the size of the die (singular, chiplets didn't appear in AMD's mobile CPUs until the AI 300 series). Remember that the iGPU is still taking up space, it's just turned off.

There is very little demand for such a CPU in laptops. As those parts would otherwise be waste, AMD is willing to sell them at an attractive price for non-demanding uses.

The only AMD chips that are competitive in price with the 8400F are older 5000 series CPUs. You might be able to get more performance from one of those, but the downside is that you're committing to an older platform where future upgrades may be limited, and to DDR4 memory that is likely to get harder to find and cost more than DDR5 does.

Man, remember when shaders came pre compiled? What a wild technology. Maybe one day we'll remember how to do it.

5700X3D is more or less almost equal to 7600X

Although 8400F is surprisingly functional, from the qualities standpoint is junk, it should be sold for pennies, it doesn't even have a basic cut down iGPU to deal around the system without a GPU, no IA, just 2 performance cores, reduced L3, reduced connectivity, etc. A bad product, like Radeon RX 6500/XT, and people are getting ripped off using the brand.

Why would you support Communist China by purchasing '7400F – a China-focused spin on the 7500F' ?

Curious as to how this performs against Intel offerings in the same price range.

Also, I find it detestable that the 7400 is faster than an 8400. Its literally pure deceptive tactics from AMD.

It's nothing new, see the Ryzen 3000 vs. 4000.

Since 2021, Odd numbered CPUs are Desktop SKUs with larger caches and Even numbered CPUs are Laptop SKUs repackaged for desktop with smaller caches. Cache = Speed so:

7xxx is faster than 8xxx

just like

3xxx is faster than 4xxx
