Which gaming laptop to pick?

Hello,

which laptop would perform best in games?

MSI GE75 Raider with i7-9750H and RTX 2080, or Alienware Area-51M with RTX 2070 and desktop i7-9700(K)?

The price is about the same in here, and I feel like the Alienware would perform better in some CPU demanding games, and the MSI better in more GPU heavy games, so I don't know which one would be better deal...

Hi,

While I don't currently have an answer for your question, I'm in a similar position where I'm researching which laptop for "gaming, etc." to purchase. If I find something interesting I'll post it here for you. Also is money a concern for your purchase?

My budget is around €2500-2600. Here in Europe laptops are more expensive.

I researched for weeks, and it seems like MSI GE75 and Area-51m are the best choices in that price range, tho the Area-51m is about 200€ more expensive with less storage. It has GSYNC (so Optimus gets completely disabled, which increases your FPS. Optimus introduces overhead). The MSI rocks RTX 2080, but the Area-51m desktop 8 core CPU... It's really hard to decide, because both of these laptops have pros and cons...

Lenovo Legion Y740 looks fine as well, but from what I read, MSI has better build quality, and they are more expensive here, considering they use Max-Q GPUs...

I just found out about "custom laptops". Do you anything about them? For instance from Clevo and other brands. There's a forum post on Linus Tech Tips that has various manufacturers that sell custom laptops for much cheaper. I'll get back to this post tomorrow hopefully.

Sager/Clevo are popular laptops. I don't know how good they are. You can also check Eluktronics Mech-17 on Amazon if you want the lowest price.

If you want good budget laptop from well known brand, check Acer Helios 300 with 1660Ti, it's currently for 1200$. On turbo mode, it overclocks the GPU and allows the CPU to run at 56W, but that thing gets very loud. The Helios 300 is also undervolted on the CPU out of the box by 125mV, so you don't have to do it yourself (it seems you will have to undervolt all, or most laptops to keep the temps under 90°C). And even if you won't hit 90°C and more, you will still want to undervolt due to the power limit.

Lenovo Legion Y740 with 1660Ti may be a better choice if the price will be similar, but I haven't seen it on amazon yet. It has Gsync and doesn't get that loud, and from what I've seen it has better temperatures than most laptops out of the box.

If you want stronger laptops but still cheaper than others, I would check that Eluktronics.

MSI GE75 Raider looks good too, I also like Alienware Area-51m, but the Area-51m is expensive.
Lenovo Legion Y740 with 2070 MaxQ doesn't look bad either if you can find it for good price. It seems it ships with 90W version of the MaxQ and isn't far behind from the 2080 Max Q which is way more expensive. Normally I wouldn't recommend Max Q GPUs, only the Lenovo for a good price. Lenovo.com makes good sales if you are from USA. Recently they had 2080Max Q version on sale for 1550$

I wasn't really impressed by ASUS laptops at all.

Of course desktop gaming PC will be way way better than laptop (lower price, better performance, temperatures and other things), but if laptop is your only choice like in my situation, then I recommend checking these laptops.

Oh, and if you want a laptop for both gaming and professional work, Gigabyte Aero 15 looks great. It has slightly higher temps than most laptops and features Max Q GPUs, but it has great battery life and good ports with Thunderbolt 3, fast SD card reader etc. Lenovo has Thunderbolt 3 too I believe. Gigabyte also configured the CPU in it to throttle down at 90°C instead of normal 100°C. Not the best laptop for pure gaming, but if you want good portable laptop for work, gaming and high battery life, this seems to be a good laptop.

You've done more research on current laptops than I have at the moment and are more knowledgeable about clevo laptops and the others since I just found out about them. I just found out about bare barebones laptops(kits) where you just install the memory, ram, wireless card, etc. Not sure if you knew about those. I am considering buying an Alienware Area-51m but if I can build similar or better specs for cheaper then I might.

I built me a desktop I'm still very happy with almost 4 years ago but don't get to use it often. I need a gaming laptop since I travel a lot.

Alienware Area-51M with RTX 2070 is the best choice here. As one of my friends owns that. I have played games on that like Max Payne, God of War, etc. Its performance is great and I suggest you to buy that :)

I got the MSI GE75 with RTX 2080 in the end. There was a discount hard to pass.

Unfortunately, the laptop runs very hot even with 125mV CPU undervolt on core and cache. Max fans speed, yet still gaming at ~95°C. GPU runs at ~85°C.

Often there is a CPU bottleneck and the RTX 2080 can't run at its full strength (depends on the game you play though). The bottleneck can be also the NVIDIA Optimus, as observed by some YouTube channels.

About the temperatures... some people had better luck with undervolting. It helped them and their CPU runs at 75°C max, but unfortunately it did not help me. Sounds like my laptop has a crap thermal paste job.

I believe the GE75 will give you better FPS in games that are more GPU bound, and the Alienware in games where GPU isn't your limiting factor. If you connect external monitor that is 1440p or 4K, the MSI will most likely give you more FPS.

When possible, pick a laptop that allows you to use NVIDIA G-Sync, or at least disable NVIDIA Optimus completely in laptop's BIOS, to get extra FPS. Connecting external monitor bypasses Optimus completely if you cannot disable Optimus.
