Modded Nvidia RTX 2080 Ti with 22GB VRAM is selling on eBay for $500

Cutting corners: As the memory crisis makes modern graphics cards less affordable each month, users, manufacturers, repair shops, and resellers are finding creative ways to squeeze every gigabyte of VRAM out of a skewed market. One method involves upgrading a nearly decade-old flagship GPU.

Budget users shopping for a path toward mid-range 4K gaming or heavy AI workloads might want to investigate a Hong Kong-based reseller. The vendor recently began offering Nvidia's RTX 2080 Ti with double its original memory for less than its current average price.

Originally released in 2019 with 11GB of GDDR6 VRAM, the 2080 Ti was a flagship in its day and still keeps pace with more recent mid-range cards. The GPU launched with an MSRP of $999 but can typically be found for roughly $670 these days.

However, users still holding on to eight-year-old 2080 Ti cards can double the GPU's memory to 22GB by replacing its 11 1GB modules with the same number of 2GB modules. Less savvy users can pay repair shops like the UAE-based GPU Solutions to perform the operation, and Zhou's store recently began selling pre-modded units on eBay for $529. The reseller notes that the modded GPUs come from various manufacturers, including Gigabyte, MSI, Asus, and Leadtek.

The upgrade gives the 2080 Ti ample headroom for handling diffusion models, large language models, and modern games at 4K with high-resolution textures and ray tracing. Modding an existing GPU is likely a good way to extend its lifespan during a time when rising memory costs have led to price hikes, with more on the way.

On the other hand, while Zhou's pre-modded cards might sound like a bargain compared to typical offers for stock models, shoppers might also want to consider more recent mid-range GPUs with similar or slightly better performance. The 2080 Ti's closest modern alternative is probably the 16GB RTX 5060 Ti, which currently goes for around $570. Its slightly better performance, more advanced ray tracing cores, and support for frame generation might make the modestly higher price worthwhile if gaming is the primary use case – and 16GB is still plenty of memory for 4K gaming.

Shoppers should probably decide soon, as GPUs are expected to become even more expensive in the coming months as the RAM crisis worsens. The situation is so extreme that cards available at MSRP have become one of QuakeCon's main attractions, and experts expect conditions to last at least through 2027.

A 22GB RTX 5060 that's missing good DLSS 4.5 support for $500 and no warranty is probably what… someone wants? Somewhere? Maybe? Does 22GB make enough of an AI difference over a faster brand new 16GB card with better feature support, or is this just an excuse to sell old tech to ignorant people?
 
For gaming, the $500 modded 2080 Ti 22GB is a pretty hard sell. Current RTX 5060 Ti 16GB street pricing is roughly $500 to $600 depending on the model and retailer, so you're now comparing this modified seven year old Turing card against a brand new Blackwell GPU with a warranty, newer RT/Tensor hardware, DLSS 4+ support, Multi Frame Generation and much better efficiency.

The one place the 22GB 2080 Ti has a legitimate advantage is local AI work. VRAM can be a hard capacity limit. If a model needs 18 - 20GB, a faster 16GB card may have to offload to system RAM or use heavier quantization, while the 22GB card may fit the workload entirely in VRAM.

But that's a very specific use case.

For everyone else, 22GB sounds impressive on an eBay title, but VRAM capacity alone does not turn old silicon into a modern $500 GPU. You're also taking on unknown memory chips, unknown workmanship, no normal manufacturer warranty and the reliability risk that comes with a heavily modified card.

Cool engineering project? Absolutely.

Good $500 gaming purchase? Not when new 16GB cards with modern features are selling in basically the same price range.

So yes, somebody doing a specific memory heavy AI workload may genuinely want this. For the average buyer, though, I suspect that giant “22GB” number is doing most of the selling.
 
I've got a 2080 Ti (with 11GB), and it can run 13B models with 6bit quant to 16k context sizes just fine (also have 64GB ram on that rig, but probably could get away with 32 for that sized context). Gotta use deeper quants or smaller models if bigger contexts are needed otherwise it is quite slow, especially to warm up if you start with a huge context (like code), but thanks to prefix caching it isn't too bad after that.

It plays games fine too, but you run into frame rate limits from the compute side before you run out of VRAM, so yeah, you don't need 22GB for anything but AI really.

I bought a new prebuilt with a 5090 the day before Trump took office (to preempt tariffs, otherwise I would've waited, though it seems, like crypto before it, we're in the middle of another PC component price storm that shows no end in sight). I don't even use the 5090 for AI, just gaming, since the 2080 Ti is more than capable, at least for the light tasks I do with it. Someday, perhaps.

5060 (ti or not ) is HOT GARBAGE in terms of performance. that 7 years old card is still better than that less than midrange ngreedia produces.
