Wikipedia is now getting paid by Meta, Microsoft, Perplexity, and other AI companies

They don't really have options I've seen numbers ranging from 30 to even 50% of wikipedias traffic/costs being due to AI scraping.
So all their data is copied regardless, to feed the thing that reduces their own income. At least now they're getting compensated for it.

Wikimedia has zero need for more money. They should make agreements to have the money go directly to worthwhile endeavors, like archive.org, that desparately needs it, rather than skimming tens of millions to pay staff who do absolutely nothing related to wikipedia. Wikimedia is a grift farm.

[Some rubbish links that show nothing and only speculate]
And Looking at the old link further back I see it's an ancient one about throwing more hardware at the problem ... Problem with that is they've been doing that and throwing a **** ton more hardware at LLMs and the results are a total nothing burger. It's exactly why this conversation is happening right now. The money and electricity is insane while the results are just another spruced up search engine.
