Windows 11 slows down AMD CPUs by up to 15 percent, fix incoming

A hot potato: In typical Microsoft fashion, the company released Windows 11 before making sure that it didn't have any major issues impacting the overall experience. Fortunately, this is a staggered release, but early adopters using an AMD-based system may experience lower performance in games when compared to Windows 10. This issue will be fixed via software updates later this month.

Windows 11 has only been available for a few days, and we're already starting to see issues surfacing around Microsoft's new operating system. Some of them are known problems related to incompatibilities with certain networking software or applications like Oracle's VirtualBox, as well as the usual assortment of bugs that accompanies pretty much any new Windows version.

However, according to a blog post from AMD (thanks, Tom's Hardware), people who upgrade to Windows 11 on a Ryzen-powered system will experience lower performance in some scenarios. The performance regression in most applications will be in the 3 to 5 percent range, but the company found during testing that you could see up to a 15 percent reduction in performance in some popular eSports games.

This issue affects all Ryzen and Athlon CPUs supported in Windows 11, including around 100 models from the Ryzen 2000 series, Ryzen 3000, Ryzen 4000, and the current-generation Ryzen 5000 series of CPUs. AMD says its EPYC processors for data centers and its Threadripper processors for workstations are also affected.

AMD explains the problem is two-fold. First, the company determined that Windows 11 can cause functional L3 cache latency to go up three times. The second is related to a feature called UEFI CCPC2 (also known as "preferred core"), which will normally schedule threads on a processor's fastest core. In the release build of Windows 11, this doesn't work as intended and will mostly impact performance for processors with eight or more cores and a TDP of over 65 watts.

For now, Microsoft and AMD recommend that you stick with a supported version of Windows 10. Both companies are working on software fixes that will arrive later this month. Seems like Microsoft spent most of their time working with intel instead to make sure Alder Lake works really well on launch with 11 and left AMD as second class citizen status regardless of actual performance and recent raise to prominence.

Again everything we read about Windows 11 tells me that Microsoft would much rather utterly fail than to concede anything that's pro consumer: they'll die on the hill of just making it a competitor to macos and it's walled garden while dragging along the rest of the users into this new era.

It's never going to work I think most people that have a choice to stay on 10 will just stay on 10 even past their planned obsolescence.

This isn’t conspiracy, MS aren’t in bed with Intel. In fact AMD and MS are working together to make the surface line.

What this is is just sheer incompetence. Which is now to be expected from MS. The only good product MS makes is the Xbox control pad.

You’d have to be mad to update to windows 11 at this point.

I am mad. Ahhhh, it's not so terrible.

Must be a total coincidence. I am sure the patch will be out after before ADL reviews and am 100% certain there‘s nothing else in there screwing with Ryzen.

Anyone updating to a brand new OS and not waiting I would definely consider mad.

I don't touch new OS for at least 6 months after launch. And the performance issues like this is not new for a new OS launch have seen this over and over for the last 20 years. Hence why I always wait.

I wonder if Intel developers actively contributing code to Windows is still a thing.

That article states that changes made by Intel had a positive effect on AMD hardware.

Also, MS currently sell AMD hardware. They even have custom silicon from AMD in their surface line and Xbox lines. It doesn’t make any sense to gimp their own partners hardware or allow another company to do it for the.

People seem quite desperate to blame Intel for a fault on AMD hardware despite there being zero evidence for it.

They'll patch it up quickly.

The bigger question is: do you want your PC to look even more like a Mac? I guess it makes attracting users from one "side" to the other easier now.

Been running W11 since it hit the Beta channel. Haven't had any issues on my R7 3700x. Not sure what everyone is complaining about. Yes I do game a lot, between Rocket League, New World and RDR2, I've had no stutters or slow downs compared to W10.

Shitty OS by shitty company which is bsing you all the time on how things should be done but never manage to deliver

Linux keeps looking better everyday. Then you dive into videos and realize it's just a very lackluster OS and you're probably going to be stuck with Windows if you want to do whatever you want without jumping through cheerio sized hoops.

Another reason I'm waiting til after the first of the year to upgrade my laptop,
and to build a new home PC.

This is a terrible release, don't forget about the almost %25 drop in GPU performance while gaming. I don't want an OS that makes my PC slower than previous gen, that's silly.

Yeah, for sure. I was a day one Vista Basic buyer, $299 for that piece. Still hurts to this day.

Either they are very rotten and corrupt, or they are incredibly incompetent.
Whether the answer is A or B, you don't wanna have business with them.

Early days - will be a complete non-issue soon .
I would sooner keep this protection - as hacking gets harder and harder - I do my banking on my PC .
Banks etc will use this type of protection more and more - You will still be able to do transfers with out it - but why make yourself low hanging fruit - add in 2FA etc
Those Italian engineers who turned off safety features for the chairlifts , 1950s built nuclear power stations - oh don't seem the need to fix that - who knows what that button does ?. Mine safety - that warning light is always going off - closing the mine - we won't get our bonus - just turn it off.
There are countless examples of people dying because people turn off safety features.
Happens on computer systems - too hard to log in - need to access remotely. Too much to move critical to another level - lets leave it in same system as mundane tasks .

Windows 10 doesnt have this problem, so don't be "beta tester" of windows 11 until windows 10 last day of support.
