If they do this then I'll go back to 10 lol. The first thing I do is turn UAC "off" when I fresh install Windows. Where's that setting in the settings app?

With the help of Gemini I have killed the ability of Microsoft to keep badgering me to "upgrade" Windows 11. I still get Defender updates (surprise) and I'm switching out of Edge altogether and killing Word's connection to the outside world. What else can we do to protect ourselves on Windows 10?

There are some things that I can only find in the control panel. Idk if there are other ways to access them (probably are), but I still use the control panel. Microslop, stop getting worse and fix your updates.

I rarely use the Settings ap, almost always Control Panel, pinned to my task bar.

You know there was recently news that someone had updated windows 7 to with latest security updates and drivers. I don't know how legit that is, but it sounds more attractive with news like this...

We can dream... I'd even grab up XP with necessary functional updates, but please give it windows 7 indexing with quick search. What a bear it was in 7 searching for files...

I'm more pleased with Windows 10 every day! No annoying updates, no UI changes, no forced AI and other garbage MS THINKS that I need.

Windows 10 is not too terrible but I really liked Windows 7

Settings exists because Microslop needed to make Win8 touch friendly. It was part of their failed attempt at creating "one windows" that would work on any and all devices. Like DOS in ME the CP was still there, just a bit of PITA to access.

I guess they kept settings in Windows 10 because they weren't giving up on their long term goal. But I've been using windows since 3.1 and the CP in 95 was a God send, I always go to it first and then reluctantly go to the settings when I'm forced to. Thank you Microslop for giving me yet another reason I'm not migrating to Win11.

Settings is such a clusterfk for anyone who actually works with computers. Despite being buggy and unreliable the main issue I have is there can only be one instance of it and any children. So if I need to be changing networks to (for example) do a mail client software test I can't have three settings windows open where I can modify networks, mail accounts and installed software between them during the testing phase, somehow that's to stop being a thing. I have to keep going back to this buggy interface and clicking and scrolling and closing and opening and clicking and searching and scrolling.... IT'S CALLED WINDOWS FFS! Why Can't I have Windows? Is it to be called Window now? A singular Window.

They had interfaces where you can only do one thing at a time in the 1980's, and could only load another application to do a different function, but when sysadmins complain now they point to Powershell as the solution. This isn't progress, it's regression, like when they took away 3d window borders. MS devs are high af, whatever it is they're on I don't want any. ./rantover

Microsoft is getting this backward as usual. Instead of removing the control panel, they need to remove settings. The control panel is much easier to use than settings.

I don't know. All of this sounds like they are moving to more like Android. Are they trying to copy Google now?

I honestly doubt they will pull this off without removing quick and useful functionality found in the CP, but not the settings app. Why not just let people use what they want? MSlop out of touch as usual.

They need to bring back WMC from 7 instead of killing off the control panel. That thing was innovative at the time when it was to early when they released it, and they killed the feature at a time when streaming was taking off. What the heck. lol

Windows 11 is such an mess. So MS removed any way to get to the "System properties" dialog box. you know, the place where you can create a restore point, RESTORE to prior restore point, add ENVIRONMENT variables, configure Remote Desktop and Remote Assistance, configure startup and recovery options! (and other things). They now changed control panel to open their "new system settings" application that hides ways to open these old components. Windows 10 had hyperlinks on RHS to "advanced properties" to get to them. This is so HALF BAKED and infuriating. Either convert it ALL to the "new UI" or at least provide an easy way to get to the CLASSIC way. They went out of their way to remove any GUI way to get to this stuff. The only way to get to it is to use Win + R -> SystemPropertiesProtection or Win + R -> control sysdm.cpl,,4

I wonder if in 6 years MS will actually support/have a decent OS?

Or will we just switch on our PCs and sit there twiddling our thumbs doing nothing as the A.I. knows whats best for us and exactly what we want to do? Actually, it will switch itself on as it knows best. All we will need to do is buy the PC and OS. It will take care of everything else.

I feel like MS should have focused on improving the stability and performance of windows 11 rather than packing in all the features no one really uses like co-pilot. If they would have focused on that for the most part we would have a product that not everyone is ranting about and moving over to Linux and mac os now with the neo.

Maybe so. But as I understand it, continued updates, security or otherwise, come at a price
Windows 7 users were offered essentially the same thing, at a price that doubled every year..

Windows 10 users are being offered the same LTSC, at double the initial price of Windows. If that policy continues, then the LTSC for Windows 10, would double 5 times...!

Did I ever tell you the story about the tradesman seeking work, who told the prince, "your highness I'll work for a mere penny a day, doubled each day for a month"? (Do the math.)

Whether or not those numbers are entirely accurate, I'm not entirely certain.

However, whether you take the extended service deal. or acquiesce <(read "submit to his highness Nadella's will"), to Windows 11, you'll feel a sharp pain every time you try to sit down afterwards.

I believe M$ had to pay for the TV listings provided in WMC . Or at the very least, killing them reduced its usefulness to a great extent. So, "if it didn't work, ostensibly, you didn't need it". Hence the fact it was absent in W 10.

They've further screwed with the Windows Media Player, by discontinuing its web search for album information. So now, if you rip a CD, what you're left with, is "unknown album", track 1, track 2, and so forth. Leaving you to type in the information for CD text, all on your lonesome.

This a**hole Nadella, is enough to make Bill Gates look like a benevolent king. All the crap we're now dealing with, is commensurate with, and attributable to, the time he took over as CEO.
