Ive seen this before..one of my friends called me saying when she boots her computer it goes to the boot menu automatic. no matter what option you press, it restarts itself and goes to the startup menu on its own. I tried to use the repair console, but it would not work saying the partiton was unknown..even when I did a reinstall..when I got to the select partition to install screen..the partiton that I was using..was listed as unknown. however after the reinstall it seems to start fine. I was wondering what happened.

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

It would seem that there was a problem with the original installation.

Just for future reference take a look at this thread just in case it happens again.

Thank you for the welcome..It seemed strange..That installation worked fine for months before this happened,I went to recovery console...but nothing would work chkdsk, nothing...went to try repair it..but it showed the xp installation as an unknown partition..as opposed to an NTFS partition..I wonder what could destroy a ntfs partition like that?

HAL tables

hardware allocation tables getting corrupted
good idea to find a defrag program that defrags on boot
cleans up the whole system
