Wireless connection: wifi vs 3g

Every now and then, I have a problem where the network connection manager pops up wanting to make a 3g connection when I already have a wifi connection. I do not have my data card in my laptop so it couldn't connect even if I told it to.

I am running Windows XP on a Toshiba Tecra M2.

Suggestions appreciated.
