XP won't boot, black screen with cursor after removing malware

Have a Dell laptop with several viruses on it. Cleaned them with Malwarebytes and MS Security Essentials.

After MS SE asked me to reboot the machine got a "hard stop" BSOD while trying to shutdown.

Now when booting the system I just get a black screen and a flashing cursor. Drive passes chkdsk and drive diagnostics just fine and I can access all the files from Linux or a Ghost boot CD but I can't get the system to boot anymore.

I was considering fixmbr but it says there's a non-standard partition which may be due to Dell's recovery partition.

Any ideas?

Can you get in to safe mode?
I usually try a safe boot with networking, let malware bytes run a full scan and remove anything, then shut down. Basically run any malware scan that will allow it in safe mode and let it do its work. This worked for me on a Dell laptop, but that was running vista.
If nothing else works I would suggest reinstalling windows. I would also suggest putting a fresh copy on after formatting with dban.
