youtube android ios 60fps

YouTube first got around to adding support for 60 frames per second video playback last year. Select video partners were the first to get the option in June followed by a full rollout to all in October. One of the few requirements, however, was that you needed to be watching from the web.

Fortunately, that’s no longer the case.

As of writing, those buttery smooth 60 fps videos can also be viewed on the YouTube mobile app for both Android and iOS. The announcement was made on the YouTube Creators Google+ page.

The good news is that you don’t need to update your mobile app to get in on the action. The bad news (if you want to call it that) is that 60 fps is only available on mobile for videos, not livestreaming. If you recall, YouTube added 60 fps livestreaming support at 720p and 1080p for desktop users back in May.

You can try out 60 fps on mobile using this link. Just be sure to change the quality to either 720p60 or 1080p60 when viewing.

As you may know, most television shows and movies are recorded at much lower frame rates. With video games, it’s a different story. Clips of games at 60 fps look gorgeous compared to those running at slower frames.

Speaking of gaming, YouTube recently announced plans to launch a gaming platform this summer called YouTube Gaming. Designed to compete with Twitch, YouTube Gaming will feature more than 25,000 game channels at launch.

So what's amazon's excuse for not being able to stream HD through Chrome? Microsoft are paying them for using silverlight? Or refusing to get with the times and realize Silverlight is crap.

Can they now fix the mess that their transcoding software makes out of every one of my uploaded videos?
They look amazing before being uploaded and like total crap after.
