What we know so far: Paramount Pictures is developing a live-action Cyberpunk 2077 film, with game developer CD Projekt Red serving as a producer alongside Transformers producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura. The adaptation offers filmmakers a dystopian world where technology threatens personal identity and corporations wield enormous power over everyday life. How faithfully the film will explore these themes remains an open question, as the partnership has been announced but the adaptation's creative direction is still undefined.

No director, cast, or release date has been announced. The project will draw on a universe where an implanted chip can carry another person's consciousness – and threaten to erase its host. The producers have not said whether the film will adapt the game's story or introduce different characters in the same setting.

That distinction matters because Cyberpunk 2077 revolves around a technological implant that places two consciousnesses in one body, with only one likely to survive unless the process can be stopped.

The game follows V, a mercenary in Night City, a fictional California metropolis. V is implanted with a cybernetic biochip containing an engram of Johnny Silverhand, a legendary rock star and terrorist. Silverhand's consciousness gradually overwrites V's own, forcing the two to work together to stop the process and save V's life.

Their search for a solution brings them into conflict with Arasaka, a powerful corporation that effectively rules Night City. The story connects the struggle for control over V's body with the corporation's broader grip on the city.

Whether these elements will carry over to the film remains unknown. Paramount has announced an adaptation set in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe, not a confirmed retelling of V's story. No details have been revealed about how the filmmakers might portray the biochip, Silverhand's presence or the battle between the two consciousnesses.

CD Projekt Red will participate in the adaptation as the game's developer and franchise rights holder. However, the announcement does not specify how much creative control the company will have over the screenplay or other production decisions.

Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura brings experience from the Transformers films. Paramount is also behind an upcoming Call of Duty movie scheduled for release in 2028, although no release window has been announced for Cyberpunk 2077.

The adaptation is moving forward as CD Projekt Red develops Cyberpunk 2, building on the original game's recovery from its troubled December 2020 launch.

CD Projekt Red spent the following years updating and improving Cyberpunk 2077, including the major 2.0 update in 2023 and the Phantom Liberty expansion.

The game has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide, while Phantom Liberty has sold 15 million. Those figures give the film a substantial existing audience, although they also reflect years of post-launch improvements rather than an uninterrupted success story from day one.
