The takeaway: Mario fans with a penchant for PC gaming, rejoice! An unofficial native PC port of Super Mario Galaxy is now available to download and best of all, you don't need an uber powerful computer to run it.
The PC port comes courtesy of keepvaibin, and is described as a work in progress. The game is fully playable on Windows 10 and newer machines, and requires just 8GB of RAM at minimum. Visually, it supports aspect ratios from 4:3 to 32:9, anti-aliasing, anisotropic filtering, AMD FidelityFX FSR 1 upscaling, and per-pixel lighting.
The least powerful machine it was tested on consisted of an Intel Core Ultra 9 185H with integrated graphics and 16GB of RAM. There, it ran at 60 FPS at 1440p.
Gamers have options when it comes to how they play. The title supports mouse and keyboard inputs as well as Xbox, Switch Pro, and Switch 2 Pro controllers.
Keepvaibin said the game was built using Anthropic's Claude AI, but all output was reviewed and tested personally. It uses no code or assets from Nintendo, but keepvaibin does note that you will need to supply your own copy of the game.
At present, there are a few known performance issues. For example, areas like Gateway Galaxy can dip below 60 frames per second on slower CPUs. Heavy background CPU load can also cause the sound to skip in certain sections. Fans of the original might also notice that some lighting and bloom effects in the Comet Observatory look slightly different.
Super Mario Galaxy debuted on the Nintendo Wii in 2007 as the third 3D platformer in the Mario franchise. The title was a hit with gamers, selling 12.8 million copies over its lifetime – good enough for 9th place overall on the list of best-selling Wii games. It also served as inspiration for the Super Mario Galaxy Movie that released earlier this year.
As DSO Gaming highlights, this is one of several unofficial PC ports of popular Nintendo games. Other noteworthy titles that have found their way to the PC include The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, and Super Mario Sunshine, just to name a few.
