Google's services continue to expand, as it plans to launch Google Base, which will enable traditional retailers to market and sell their goods online. A kind of "virtual supermarket", Google Base will index and package product information submitted by retail companies. The service has been created in response to fears that online advertising growth is stalling.

"Google Base is going to have a huge impact on retailers," said Mr Arora.

According to Mr Arora, the company found through research that many leading European retailers did not feel they were competitive enough online. However, it is unclear how many companies will respond to Google's initiative, since many of the world's largest retailers have already invested heavily in their own online operations.
