What just happened? A new player has entered the massive-monitor market. Philips might not be breaking the tradition of awkward names with the 49M2C8900, but the 48.9-inch, 240Hz display looks like it could stand out from the crowd with its impressive feature list.
The 49M2C8900 is the latest addition to the Philips premium Evnia 8000 line, boasting a spec list that will likely appeal to gamers. In addition to its huge size and blistering refresh rate, there's a Double-QHD (5210 x 1440, 32:9, 108.77 PPI) resolution, 0.03 ms GtG response time, a 1800R curve, adaptive sync, and VESA ClearMR (Clear Motion Ratio) 13000 certification for blur-free gaming. It's also a true 10-bit QD-OLED panel with DisplayHDR True Black 400 certification (450 nits peak brightness), offering all the benefits of OLED.
The monitor also comes with a built-in 30W DTS sound output via the four 7.5W speakers and Philips' exclusive Ambiglow surround lighting for amplifying a game's immersion.
The 49M2C8900 sounds like it will appeal to content creators as well as gamers. It comes with a color gamut that covers 99% DCI-P3, 127.4% NTSC, 153.1% sRGB, and 125.2% Adobe RGB. It's also factory calibrated so the sRGB mode offers a DeltaE of less than 2.
Port-wise, the Philips monitor offers one DisplayPort 1.4, two HDMI 2.1 inputs, and a single USB Type-C with DP-Alt mode and 90W power delivery. There is also a USB hub with USB version 3.2 Gen1 / 5 Gbps, one USB-B upstream, and four USB-A downstream (with two for fast charge BC 1.2).
Monitors like this don't come cheap, of course. The UK MSRP is £1,650 or around $2,093, while the price in Europe is €1,950 ($2,110). No confirmation of a US price just yet.
TV-sized monitors are becoming more common these days. Samsung has made a few models, the most recent being the Odyssey OLED G9 which has a spec list very similar to the Philips 49M2C8900 and costs around $1,800. For something cheaper, check out the 42-inch LG C2 OLED TV, which doubles as an excellent PC monitor and can be found at a good price now that the newer model is available.
