Apple iPhone 15 Plus

Overview

The iPhone 15 Plus checks off all of the marks, which is no easy feat when I’ve been spoiled by other flagship phones. I think the average person will be delighted by the iPhone 15 Plus, assuming they have a knack for larger screens. The addition of pro-level features in the iPhone 15 Plus make it a much more satisfying successor, especially against the other options at its price range.

Overall, these changes come together to make the iPhone 15 feel like a big step forward for those upgrading from an aging iPhone. (That includes me, an iPhone 12 owner.) But it's not a dramatic difference from Apple's previous generation phone. Rather, it feels like an extension of the iPhone 14 Pro, which can make it hard to recommend over last year's premium iPhone if you can still find it at a discount.

The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus remind me a lot of a mainstream crossover, like a Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4. (If you’re curious what the Pro models would be, I’d place them as a more cutting-edge EV.) But they are capable, practical, reliable, and accessible enough that a lot of people are going to find these phones very suitable for their needs. And they will do a great job as their phone for the next three to four years until they are ready to get a new one.

But a live, clickable one. It uses that real estate at the top of the phone to show you what song is playing on Spotify, your timer countdowns, the status of your Uber ride. My experience with Dynamic Island was limited before using the iPhone 15, and I’m surprised to say I sort of love it. OK, love is a strong word. No one should really love a phone. I like the iPhone 15. Let’s leave it at that.

Other than the lack of a higher refresh rate display (I'd be happy with 90Hz), even I see little reason to upgrade to the iPhone 15 Pro this year. The iPhone 15 features 2x zoom through sensor cropping, overall better camera performance, stunning colours alongside a far more premium design than we've seen in the past from Apple's base-level iPhones, and, of course, the Dynamic Island.

The new iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus really are a tremendous pair of smartphones. Apple has packed these handsets with a raft of features that were only previously reserved for the pricier Pro models. A subtle tweak to the flat-edged design, introduced with the iPhone 12 back in 2020, adds a smooth contoured edge design making things feel a lot nicer in the hand.

If you already own an iPhone 14 Plus, then there's little to no reason to upgrade. If you're coming from an older generation, things get a bit more complex and will depend on your inclination toward bigger screens. If you're an Android user and looking for a gateway into Apple's ecosystem, the iPhone 15 Plus could be a great choice, given the USB-C transition, which will most likely save you some cables and chargers.

Between the arrival of the Dynamic Island and a large step up in-camera capabilities, there is much to like about the iPhone 15. Even if you have an iPhone 14, you might consider upgrading for those two reasons, but those coming from an older iPhone will see the improvements.
