Hey all, my computer got hit with this bad boy last night. The only two programs that I can access directly are word pad and MSN Messenger. But thankfully through the messenger I can open a Firefox browser. Anyways, googling the problem brought me here and I noticed I am suppose to follow https://www.techspot.com/community/topics/updated-4-step-viruses-spyware-malware-removal-preliminary-instructions.58138/, along with posting the logs (whatever those things are), so here it goes. Thanks a lot fo any help anyone can provide. I use my computer a lot but I am very untechnical. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I'm having an issue already. I went to to download avast!'s antivirus and when I click to "register for free licence" a warning comes up that says "Please complete the following form". I filled it all the blanks (name, country, where heard of avast!) so I'm not sure which form it's reffering to.

==================================================================

You're running two AV programs, Avast and Norton.
One of them has to go.
If Norton use this tool: http://majorgeeks.com/Norton_Removal_Tool_SymNRT_d4749.html

Then....

Download aswMBR to your desktop.
Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it.
If you see this question: Would you like to download latest Avast! virus definitions?" say "Yes".
Click the "Scan" button to start scan.
On completion of the scan click "Save log", save it to your desktop and post in your next reply.

NOTE. aswMBR will create MBR.dat file on your desktop. This is a copy of your MBR. Do NOT delete it.

====================================================================

Download Bootkit Remover to your desktop.

  • Unzip downloaded file to your Desktop.
  • Double-click on boot_cleaner.exe to run the program (Vista/7 users,right click on boot_cleaner.exe and click Run As Administrator).
  • It will show a Black screen with some data on it.
  • Right click on the screen and click Select All.
  • Press CTRL+C
  • Open a Notepad and press CTRL+V
  • Post the output back here.

I'm having a new problem right now. When the virus first hit, the only things I could access directly were wordpad and MSN messenger. I was able to open an internet browser through MSN. However, last night messenger stopped working. It will boot up but I will get "Windows Live Messenger has stopped working" notice and close down. I just searched Firefox under the start menu and it popped up for about half a second, then I got blue screen which said a problem had been found it's rebooting. Now it's the black screen that says "Boot from AHCI CD-Rom: Operating System not found". Any advise for this?

Edit: I just "crt-ALT-DEL" on the black screen and booted up normally. I can now get to a browser. Not sure what the problem was, but it seems to be fixed. Anyways, I'll get the information you need. Thanks.

Second Edit: Looks like it was only a quick, temporary fix. Blue screen came back, so I restarted it and ran it in safemode and the same thing happened again. So I cannot access any browser on my laptop right now.

Alright, another problem has come up. I was able to get all the things you told me to get (including the USB Vaccine) on a USB. Installing the USB Vaccine on the infected laptop went fine, but the Norton removal did not go as well. When I click on it, the popup comes up to run and I click that. After that is a clicked, a new popup comes up. This popup has no writing, except for a bunch of x's in a very light font, and it has three clickable options with no writing. The options are in a row, if you click the first one the second one just gets highlighted and vice versa, if I click the third option, it closes the program. The Norton protection expired months ago, so removing the other antivirus doesn't seem like an option. Is there anyway around this? Thanks again, I really appreciate the help so far.

Installing the USB Vaccine on the infected laptop went fine
You didn't pay attention.
You're suppose to install USB Vaccine on GOOD computer.

Skip Norton removal tool for now.

No, I did. I installed it on the good computer too. Unless I wasn't suppose to install on the infected one, it's installed on both.

Anyways, here is the log from the aswmrb:

Hmm, when I go to paste the results of the notepad from the bootkit all that shows up is "u". Anyways, I copied down the blackscreen because I have a feeling "u" isn't what you need to see. Here's what the blackscreen said (again, the format might be a little off due to me having to type it out but all the info and numbers should be correct):

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
  • Never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
  • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
  • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.
  • Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • NOTE1. If Combofix asks you to install Recovery Console, please allow it.
    NOTE 2. If Combofix asks you to update the program, always do so.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt"
**Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall
**Note 2 for AVG and CA Internet Security users: ComboFix will not run until AVG/CA Internet Security is uninstalled as a protective measure against the anti-virus. This is because AVG/CA Internet Security "falsely" detects ComboFix (or its embedded files) as a threat and may remove them resulting in the tool not working correctly which in turn can cause "unpredictable results". Since AVG/CA Internet Security cannot be effectively disabled before running ComboFix, the author recommends you to uninstall AVG/CA Internet Security first.
Use AppRemover to uninstall it: https://www.techspot.com/downloads/5514-appremover.html
We can reinstall it when we're done with CF.
**Note 3: If you receive an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion", restart computer to fix the issue.
**Note 4: Some infections may take some significant time to be cured. As long as your computer clock is running Combofix is still working. Be patient.

Make sure, you re-enable your security programs, when you're done with Combofix.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

NOTE.
If, for some reason, Combofix refuses to run, try one of the following:

1. Run Combofix from Safe Mode.

2. Delete Combofix file, download fresh one, but rename combofix.exe to your_name.exe BEFORE saving it to your desktop.
Do NOT run it yet.
Please download and run the below tool named Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) which may help allow other programs to run.
There are 4 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
Vista and Win7 users need to right click Rkill and choose Run as Administrator
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

* Rkill.com
* Rkill.scr
* Rkill.exe
  • Double-click on the Rkill icon to run the tool.
  • If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • If it does not work, repeat the process and attempt to use one of the remaining links until the tool runs.
  • Do not reboot until instructed.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.
Once you've gotten one of them to run, immediately run your_name.exe by double clicking on it.

If normal mode still doesn't work, run BOTH tools from safe mode.

In case #2, please post BOTH logs, rKill and Combofix.

DO NOT make any other changes to your computer (like installing programs, using other cleaning tools, etc.), until it's officially declared clean!!!

  • Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows: OTL.txt and Extras.txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post them back here.

The icons have returned to my desktop, but the wallpaper is still black and whenever I open an internet browser it still gives me the bluescreen.

Whenever I click on OTL it gives me a popup which says "OTL by Old Timer- Version 3.2.39.2" and it has a white box where I can write or paste things, but there's no scan button.

See if you can change background manually.

Disable your AV program.
Delete OTL file, download fresh one and try again.

1. Download Security Check from HERE, and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
  • Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

    NOTE SecurityCheck may produce some false warning(s), so leave the results reading to me.

2. Please download Farbar Service Scanner (FSS) and run it on the computer with the issue.
  • Make sure the following options are checked:
    • Internet Services
    • Windows Firewall
    • System Restore
    • Security Center
    • Windows Update
    • Windows Defender
  • Press "Scan".
  • It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
  • Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

3. Download Temp File Cleaner (TFC)
  • Double click on TFC.exe to run the program.
  • Click on Start button to begin cleaning process.
  • TFC will close all running programs, and it may ask you to restart computer.

4. Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner

  • Disable your antivirus program
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use
  • Click Start
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check Scan archives
  • Click Start
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, click on List of found threats
  • Click on Export to text file , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • NOTE. If Eset won't find any threats, it won't produce any log.

I'm running the ESET online scanner now. After it runs the scan, a new popup comes up but it has no writing on. There are two clickable boxes (one on top of another) but I don't know what either ones is asking and there's no scan archives button

Edit: whenever I put the mouse over the popup, my screen flashes to black and then comes back.
