Access Denied: Trying to get files off of hard drive

My Dell laptop is dead (possible motherboard problem). I took out my hard drive and put it into a caddy which I have connected to my desk top. In trying to access my user folder from the laptop's hard drive, it says "Access Denied". I cannot view the files, move it to a shared folder or anything. What can I do? Am I screwed? :dead:
