Amazon is spending $1 billion to win over towns fighting its data centers

Connecting the dots: Like other tech companies expanding their data center infrastructure across the US, Amazon is facing backlash from rural and small-town residents over rising power bills, groundwater depletion, and severe noise and air pollution. To address the growing protests, Amazon is rolling out Built Together, a community investment initiative worth more than $1 billion over five years, designed to support towns hosting its hyperscale facilities.

In a blog post, Amazon Web Services CEO Matt Garman said the company will invest more than $1 billion over the next five years in data center towns across the US, on top of its existing efforts.

According to Garman, the funds will support local residents through social, economic, and environmental initiatives, including education, job training, energy affordability, water and energy preservation, and other local priorities.

Garman also said Amazon no longer uses nondisclosure agreements with the government agencies it works with, and is hosting open houses in the communities where it operates to improve transparency around its data center facilities. He added that the company will "encourage open dialogue" by sharing its plans early and ensuring residents have the facts and a chance to engage as projects progress.

Alongside the funding announcement, Garman pushed back on what he called "misinformation and outright lies" about data centers. He cited "widespread reports" of "various countries intentionally seeding misinformation" in the US to trick Americans into slowing down AI development.

Noting that more than 100 data center moratoriums are being considered across the country, Garman warned that if these measures are enacted, the US "could be writing its own losing ticket" in the AI race, and that the consequences would last generations.

Amazon hopes the new announcements will help quell the growing protests, even as a recent AP-NORC poll showed that roughly six in ten Americans favor limiting the number of new data center facilities. With resentment toward data centers at an all-time high, politicians across party lines are backing calls for a moratorium on new facilities.

While Democrats have long questioned unrelenting data center expansion, several influential MAGA Republicans, including Ohio gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy and Michigan US Senate candidate Mike Rogers, have recently backed moratoriums in their respective states.

President Trump, however, has remained steadfast in his support for AI data centers, claiming protesters are "making a mistake." He also lashed out at AI regulation advocates, including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, describing their warnings about a potential AI-fueled existential crisis for humanity as a "hoax."

These data centers provide no long term jobs, take huge amounts of space, and drive up utility costs. It's not misinformation, it's facts corpos don't want to hear.

These towns should jack up the tax rates on data centers to make up for this. If AI is really su profitable, it shouldn't be an issue, right?

Staying out of the Ai good or Ai bad opinion; Fact is humans have existed without Ai for thousands upon thousands of years now. We do not *need* this technology by any means. Fact also is, investors & the billionaire tycoon class, has invested so much into Ai, that if it fails or meets heavy resistance, it effects their wallets & the stock market in a big way. All about money, as it's always been.

I think the world will be a lot better off if the US does infact lose the AI race. The US is pure cooperate interests at this point, they don't even pretend that's not the case anymore.

I’m sure our national security and worldwide economic interests most definitely wouldn’t be impacted by this at all. Surely no terrible things could happen as a result of this.

All the have to do is pay our electric bills, and truck in all the fresh water we can use (every citizen in that community, boundaries to be set by the towns people) the entire time that data center is operating there. I'd vote yes!

Sure buddy, "misinformation". You know how to solve your problem? It's very, very easy:

- Pay your taxes. Don't lobby or corrupt for so-called "deals", which are in the end regular paying paying your share.
- 100% recycle your water usage.
- Don't put anything back into the wild. Clean up your own trash.
- Add isolation to your structure, so that less than a single decibel at one meter outside is heard.
- Build the infrastructures needed yourself.
- Buy last-user contract from electricity providers, so that price stay the same and if the provider run out you're the first to be cut off. Or build your own, carbon free, electricity generation.

Basically, don't make citizens subsidize your operations.

There's no such thing as an A.I race, eventually other countries end up getting the same information other countries have in order to build their own.

If anything we are being used as the guinea pigs for other countries to enjoy with far less effort and money spent.

I sure hope we lose, tired of this race to see who can be #1 not just with this AI sh!t but with everything. Just focus on helping your people not wars, military ,etc. Every country should do the same. I'm embarrassed to say I'm proud to be born and raised in the US, because of this dumb orange sh!t bag.
