Hardware disk encryption has been automatically enabled on Mac's since the late intel based Mac's from what I can find, checking my Neo, it is indeed enabled.Need to compare how quickly the laptops drains its battery when performing typical tasks while running on battery power.
I'm wondering if disk encryption is enabled and if there is an antivirus on the MB Neo.
Then don't use those services. You have freedom not to use basically anything you don't like. For some reason I don't see any "regular" updates on software you say. Perhaps updates are also Company Policy. It seems you are blaming Windows because your company screws up. If your company uses Apple, you probably have similar problems and then Apple is to blame?Let's break this down, Microsoft regularly push updates to ask you again, and again... and again, if you'd like to use those services, even going so far as to force them on in the past, yes they're optional, as long as you're diligent, also, I'm forced to use them for work anyway, company policy.
Firefox is using Apple browser engine unless you are located in EU or on some other countries. At least that is something I understand. So most users are NOT using "real" Firefox instead of just Firefox "skin".It's quite telling you really haven't used MacOS, I use Firefox for example, it's same the Firefox you find on Windows and Linux, nothing different, I use Outlook instead of Mail, I use the Office suite instead of Apples, I use OneDrive instead of iCloud etc... I'd argue Apple allows for better control than Windows, I can turn off Siri and all the AI stuff with a single toggle, never prompts again, never pushes to enable it, just does what I ask it to do.
Yeah well, things change it seems. You're thinking of iOS which does have more limitations, such as browsers are forced to use their Webkit rendering, which I agree, is a massive limitation, they don't exist on MacOS however.
You sure there is nothing wrong on Windows install, settings or just your "company policy". People have tendency to blame wrong company when there are problems. Just like Valve VAC bans "were" AMD fault when problem was that Valve VAC banned people that didn't use actual cheatsSee, once again, you're arguing something you know nothing about, I need the RAM as I need to virtualise multiple switching environments and test changes out, the Neo is absolutely a limitation here, I need more RAM, that's just how that piece of work goes, but Teams? Outlook? Word? Just seem to load faster, and crash far less frequently (specifically Teams) vs when they're running on Windows, which is crazy.
Can you customize for example desktop UI for what you want or are you stuck with what Apple offers you? I doubt it. Sure there are software replacements for certain programs but ability to make OS what you like is very limited. If it was so limited, why have I been able to replace my work and personal laptops with a single Neo? Why have I found all my software works fine in MacOS? Or I've found direct replacements? Examples, Notepad++ is Nextpad++ in MacOS, PuTTy/CMD/Powershell is Tabby in MacOS etc...
I must stress, I've been a Windows person since the late 90's and only dabbled in MacOS a couple of times up until this year, Your view on MacOS is very wrong, you seem to think it's iOS, it just isn't, it's far more open, you aren't locked to an App store for starters.
WTF are you on about? Most companies use Microsoft's 365 stack, or at least, here in the UK they do, it's extremely popular software, I'm telling you, Teams works better on MacOS than it does Windows, or at least, in my experience so far, That's it, Apple has close to nothing to do with it, Microsoft has everything to do with it...Then don't use those services. You have freedom not to use basically anything you don't like. For some reason I don't see any "regular" updates on software you say. Perhaps updates are also Company Policy. It seems you are blaming Windows because your company screws up. If your company uses Apple, you probably have similar problems and then Apple is to blame?
You need to read my comment again, this is not true for MacOS, it is not locked down like iOS, you are spreading misinformation here.Firefox is using Apple browser engine unless you are located in EU or on some other countries. At least that is something I understand. So most users are NOT using "real" Firefox instead of just Firefox "skin".
It is my machine, but the company I work for has a very strict security policy around BYOD devices, it's basically a company machine that I'm allowed to have a heavily locked down local account for personal use, it's essentially a work machine at this point though.Your machine probably again is your machine, not company machine and that makes huge difference.
It does indeed, and you seem to be living 25 years behind from the looks of it, MacOS has never had the same restrictions as iOS, no forced app stores, no forced browser rendering, it's an actual desktop OS just like Windows.Yeah well, things change it seems.
Windows was re-installed less than a year ago, same monitoring software on both machines, in my investigations, I think it's an issue with power, the Intel CPU and Lenovo's tuning, if I set Windows to "balanced" it throttles to 1GHz and becomes unusable, if I set it "performance" it maxes out permanently and the CPU sits at 105c all day long, makes it usable, but extremely loud and kills the battery in 5 minutes, Probably an issue with Lenovo (I keep drivers and firmware up-to-date by policy) but it's been an issue since I got this laptop (barely 2 years old). You sure there is nothing wrong on Windows install, settings or just your "company policy". People have tendency to blame wrong company when there are problems. Just like Valve VAC bans "were" AMD fault when problem was that Valve VAC banned people that didn't use actual cheatsIt just seems that there is problems somewhere else but Windows is to blame.
Of course you can customise it, it's more customisable than Windows in some respects, e.g. the "dock" (sorta like the Windows taskbar) can be moved to any edge of the screen, Windows is stuck to the bottom only. Can you customize for example desktop UI for what you want or are you stuck with what Apple offers you? I doubt it. Sure there are software replacements for certain programs but ability to make OS what you like is very limited.
Again, you're getting MacOS and iOS mixed up, MacOS has NEVER been locked to an app store, ever, you can install apps from wherever you want, just like Windows.App store is just now unlocked, it was locked for many years. Good question is why it was locked in first place.
The year the CPU was made has nothing to do with Microsoft allowing Win11 to run on it. It has to do with the Trusted Platform Module being present which started appearing on motherboards in 2003.Windows 11 has hardware limitations though, it's in the news regularly how it doesn't support CPU's before 2018...
...I bought it because it was cheap and I hadn't bought myself a laptop in 12 years and also wanted to play around with MacOS and learn what it has to offer. What I didn't expect was my work laptop to breakdown one day and use the Neo in an emergency, just to find it's MILES better than Windows, even running Microsoft's own software...
If it was so limited, why have I been able to replace my work and personal laptops with a single Neo?
To officially run Windows 11, your CPU must have 2 or more cores, a clock speed of 1 GHz or faster, and appear on Microsoft's list of supported processors. Generally, this means an Intel 8th Generation or newer or an AMD Ryzen 2nd Generation or newer processor is required. The year the CPU was made has nothing to do with Microsoft allowing Win11 to run on it. It has to do with the Trusted Platform Module being present which started appearing on motherboards in 2003.
Where was I comparing to a 12-year-old laptop? I was comparing to a 2 year old work laptop?Compare any 12-year-old laptop to a modern one and the difference is going to be massive. Anyone who's gotten a new computer after being on one that's over a decade old is going to think this new computer is amazing, no matter what it is.
I don't really know what to respond to this, I don't care about the 12-year-old laptop, I was never comparing the two.You were able to change to a Neo, because your work doesn't need high-performance compute or graphics and any modern laptop is going to outperform your broken 12-year-old laptop.
Tip for AMD:
Stop shipping old effing architectures with your own stuff so you can beat Apple in performance instead. People might actually be interested in that.
An ad to show that your competitor is bad at gaming that everyone knew in the first place. How much money went towards this? Literally makes yourself look bad, and you paid for it.
Fire your advertising branch, use the money saved to hire more software developers or something.
I swear every time AMD makes claims other than launch benchmarks they do themselves a disservice.
Cut files, do you mean move files? As a recent MacOS convert, am I going crazy, but there isn't a way to "cut" files like Windows and Linux?
I also understand why Apple scales external screens the way it does, but it does annoy me how overly large everything is on a 27inch 4k display, Windows Scaling works far better, it seems with Apple, you have to have a 5k screen or above for it to work properly.
I've heard there's an App for MacOS (Better Display) that might fix my issues though, need to check it out at some point.
not sure if it will help, but a link below is to some battery tests.Need to compare how quickly the laptops drains its battery when performing typical tasks while running on battery power.
I'm wondering if disk encryption is enabled and if there is an antivirus on the MB Neo.
I agree I have no idea about Apple operating systems. I have read about Apple having antitrust cases etc about App store but it seems Apple has TWO different operating systems. One is not locked. Another is but it's not locked if you are living on area X. Sounds pretty "simple", right? Windows is proprietary but pretty open for programs. Linux is free and open for programs. Simple, eh?WTF are you on about? Most companies use Microsoft's 365 stack, or at least, here in the UK they do, it's extremely popular software, I'm telling you, Teams works better on MacOS than it does Windows, or at least, in my experience so far, That's it, Apple has close to nothing to do with it, Microsoft has everything to do with it...

Yeah, Intel CPU is one to blame. I really wonder why most laptops contain Intel trash.Might be, might not be a Microsoft Windows fault, even in high performance mode though, Teams just can't cope with doing much in it without freezing or crashing, something that just doesn't happen on the much lower spec'ed Mac.
Luckily we have programs like Explorer Patcher that solves problems like that. Also main reason why you cannot easily move taskbar on Windows is Apple. Microsoft wants to make Windows less customizable because Apple fanboys want everyone to have same experience and Microsoft tries to lure Apple users that way.Of course you can customise it, it's more customisable than Windows in some respects, e.g. the "dock" (sorta like the Windows taskbar) can be moved to any edge of the screen, Windows is stuck to the bottom only.

No. AMD has gained lots of market share on servers. Retail desktop CPUs too. HEDT market is AMD only. However most laptops are OEM trash and OEMs buy Intel. Why should AMD bother with new architectures for laptops as OEMs rather buy whatever trash Intel is providing them?Tip for AMD:
Stop shipping old effing architectures with your own stuff so you can beat Apple in performance instead. People might actually be interested in that.
I'm going to ignore the rest of your comment for now as I do wonder on this, do you have a job? And if so, is it in the IT sector? And finally we have reason for your bad experience. Intel CPU that runs 105 degrees and runs at 1 GHz. You finally admitted you are using laptop with trash CPU and it's Windows fault of course. Just like I told above, you are blaming wrongly Windows as your laptop simply sucks. Use AMD and problems solved. This is one reason why desktop users are much more intelligent than laptop users and reason why AMD just won't bother with laptop users. They buy Intel anyway.
Exactly that, it seems Apple works on a "copy then delete" type system, they don't have a "move" or "cut" option, which is annoying to be honest, higher chance of having random duplicated files all over the place.Cut files, do you mean move files?
Oh for sure, 4k is way to small, but 1080p seems way to big in my eyes, the 1440p option makes everything look terrible, but the sizing is just right, the scaling just doesn't work well when the resolution doesn't fit a certain ppi it seems, I've gotten used to it, just zoom out on certain websites to fit more on the screen, but it is something Windows is noticeably better at by default.Cut files, do you mean move files?
Not sure what mean by overly large,I have a 32 inch 4K display, if I go to displays in settings and click on more space 3840x2160, I can not see it, as everything is far too small. I have mine on default, 1920x1080
Perhaps Macbook Neo is nor for gaming but good question is What it is for? AMD is better for gaming and for everything else PC platform is just offering much more software, better backwards compatibility and more (or expandable) memory. Cannot see any reason why anyone should be bothered with that crap. But of course Apple fanboys will buy anything Apple tells them to.
I was a Windows person until earlier this year, you have it all wrong, nothing works very well on Windows, you'll only notice this once you've actually tried using a Mac for a little while though.
Once you go back to Windows, and you're constantly bombarded with popups for Edge, then Windows Updates, then driver updates, BIOS updates, then the start menu can't find the document you're looking at on the desktop, then OneDrive crashes, then Teams crashes, because Windows has eaten all 16GB of RAM to open a single Edge window etc...
It has been utterly hilarious to me how good the Neo's been for my work needs, there's the odd moment I have had to open up the old work laptop, Sometimes, I still need that 32GB of RAM, but other than those rare moments, the Neo's 8GB of RAM hasn't been a drawback for 95% of everything I've needed it to. Been almost weird having an actually reliable laptop.
I am working right now but not in IT sector. However I know more than well enough what I'm talking about. When it comes to IT department buying computers, it always goes like this:I'm going to ignore the rest of your comment for now as I do wonder on this, do you have a job? And if so, is it in the IT sector?
1. I have ever seen any McAfree ads on my computer.Oh, there's plenty of good users for a Mac:
1 - It's not Windows and users don't pull their hair out over constant McAfee bloatware ads.
2 - A Mac is a part of a modern mobile/laptop/tablet/etc. ecosystem, which is something that AMD and
Microsoft cannot provide at the moment.
3 - A Mac comes with Find My, which one can use to track their iPhone, AirPods, AirTag'd items, etc.
4 - A Mac can run many iPhone apps natively, or it has access to iPhone Mirroring.
5 - A Mac can run Crossover, VM, Steam, etc. and plays plenty of games.
6 - Lastly, people who use Macs are generally more interested in getting work done, creating music, art, videos, etc. Gaming is an after-thought.
Okay so, now let me quote your own comment:I am working right now but not in IT sector. However I know more than well enough what I'm talking about. When it comes to IT department buying computers, it always goes like this:
- Supplier/OEM offers certain models for desktop/laptop/server etc.
- Buyer for some reason "must" take what is offered.
- Buyer for some reason cannot easily change supplier/OEM.
- Buyer for some reason cannot ask for different models from supplier/OEM.
Therefore if OEM/supplier only offer trash, buyer takes trash and is happy with that.
So far no-one has offered any single good explanation why it should go like this. It just goes and that's it. Done.
Who do you think I am at the company I work for? I can certainly tell you, I am not high up enough to make any kind of changes on what laptops are purchased.Use AMD and problems solved. This is one reason why desktop users are much more intelligent than laptop users and reason why AMD just won't bother with laptop users. They buy Intel anyway.
I understand that there are one or few users that make purchases and then there are hundreds or thousands users that use what those few purchase. Also I understand you just cannot easily switch to AMD because your company decides what you use. But again, that doesn't change result at all.Okay so, now let me quote your own comment:
Who do you think I am at the company I work for? I can certainly tell you, I am not high up enough to make any kind of changes on what laptops are purchased.
Anyway, if you wanted to continue this chat, PM me.
Yeah I gave up reading the rant, you should know Intel Ultra Series CPU's are designed to get that hot, it's plenty fast when it's hot, it's when it cools down it drops to 1GHz, that's why I think it's a Lenovo / Windows thing, It's the Windows power settings that seem to change this behaviour, but the behaviour itself is dictated by Lenovo's tuning, so who knows.I understand that there are one or few users that make purchases and then there are hundreds or thousands users that use what those few purchase. Also I understand you just cannot easily switch to AMD because your company decides what you use. But again, that doesn't change result at all.
And if you read my post, I said you admitted your laptop overheats and therefore I said you should blame laptop, not Windows. Rest of post is my General Rant about companies using Intel. If you thought that was personal, it was not. I never mentioned that You purchased that laptop because I know your company did it etc. Nothing personal there.
I have apologised to all my Mac friends profusely for months now, I was wrong, they were right, MacOS is actually pretty damn awesome.I started using Macs in 2010 and I have never looked back. Windows Vista was a nightmare, and Windows 8, 10, and 11 are mostly just fresh coats of paint on a trainwreck of an OS.
You can move files by pressing command when you copy. So click on the file you want to move, drag it to where you want to move it to and press command before you release the mouse button.Exactly that, it seems Apple works on a "copy then delete" type system, they don't have a "move" or "cut" option, which is annoying to be honest, higher chance of having random duplicated files all over the place.
