AMD X870/X870E Motherboard Roundup: 21 Motherboards Tested

I just had a look on South Africa's prices for Motherboards The 879 range from 8.5k-10.5k but the x670 MSI MEG X670E GODLIKE is 30k. Holy crap. That is 10k more than a 7900XTX and 10k less than a 4090 just for a damn motherboard. They bloody well should make sure that mobo is made of gold.

Many thanks for the tremendous work and this very interesting, rare and useful review !
You write that DDR5-8000 EXPO kit failed to boot on some boards (the 3 Asrock Nova/Taichi only I guess in fact), and that some boards were not stable with DDR5-8000 during the one hour Prime 95 test.
Considering I'm not an overclocking enthusiast, what is the impact in terms of usage, and you think the real practical differences in gaming performance, in my case mainly on Flight simulator 2020 and 2024 to come, between DDR5-8000 or above and DDR5 below 8000 (6000 or 7400 for the Nova) are significant ?

Or at least they should make sure it doesn't have damaged components, coil whine, extensive guarantee, good customer support and something like EVGA's Step-Up program was.

According to the specs the Asus ROG Strix X870E-E Gaming WiFi should support ECC. So it’s this an error here or in the specs?!

Thank you for the round-up.
MB prices are getting out of hand, we all know that AMD ecosystem last longer for each platform, but $400-$500 for a mobo.... is an overkill price, knowing that tech keeps introducing new features/revisions into mainstream in a 3y cadence more or less ...
my personal choice, goes for Asrock Pro RS, which I think it check's many boxes for its price/performance/quality/features ..for $210, not perfect, but its a smart-buy.

I realize these are all quite expensive, but compared to what the price of the X670 series, these X870 boards are on average about 40% less? That's at least going in the right direction? Still too expensive, I agree, but better nonetheless.

Yeah, really. X670 boards are now two year old and guess what? X870 boards do not offer basically anything new. I can pretty much guarantee that when x670 boards are three years old, there are still not much better motherboards available.

CAMM ram .. is next. BTF will probably have a "standard" in the meanwhile...

Just upgraded from an ancient 8086K (ancient but still decent in 4k).

And the boot time, just to reach the bios, just baffles me ...

As someone who hasn't used AMD for years, please can someone explain what the Operating Frequency relates to in these tests? I know it says CCD1 + CCD2, which are the chiplets, but what is the Operating Frequency a measure of? Is it the CPU clock speed, just the CCDs or a measure of the link between the main cores and CCDs?

Honestly, even if you didn't actually test the boards, just posted up the specs and reviewed them like that.. it would be heaps better than what the manufactures give you. Usually on their sites its all over the shop, even same company to different board, its hard to work out.

And I don't think I've ever seen actual specs on sites about the VRM. Which is amazing to see you've posted here.

Not sure how you do the costings on this type of review, but maybe in the future, you can work with a local PC store, and have them send you a bunch of mobos, for you to eventually return ... then they can sell them as open box or whatever. (and have them sponsored/mentioned in/through the roundup/review)

I appreciate the time and effort taken to create this article.
Thanks for the detailed graphs.
prices where I'm at get worse every day, so I need the info for picking value.
