With the iPad fresh in the hearts and minds of consumers, Apple plans to introduce the next evolution of its iPhone OS. The company today handed out invitations to media outfits for the unveiling of iPhone OS 4.0. The event will be held on the Apple campus at 10AM, this Thursday. Beyond that, details are extremely limited. The invitation simply showed the image below saying, " Get a sneak peek into the future of iPhone OS."

It was previously speculated that Apple would launch the next major revision of iPhone OS along with an iPhone HD on June 22. That's still likely considering the words "sneak peek" -- this week's gathering is presumably nothing more than a demonstration. Apple's iPhone OS 4.0 is expected to bring multitasking, and possibly even a file system that lets users save and open documents from outside of a particular application.

Boring. Those things can be done already by jailbreaking, although it would be interesting if Apple managed to make multitasking work on the slower 3G.

It's not boring to the millions of folks who don't have a hacked iPhone. Besides, there will presumably be more to the update.

Yeay! All the foo's just got their iPad's and they're already obsolete! Good job Apple!

Maybe a naive question - but will the iphone 4.0 software work on an iphone 3g or 3gs

I don't think there's been an announcement as far as upgrade path for older iPhones. Historically, the iPhone OS has been backwards compatible. I would probably wait for Apple to release something official, because there could be driver issues if you dump the 4.0 OS from a yet released 4.0 iPhone and try to reverse that onto the older phone.

You're telling me they don't know when they'll release the os operating system on the iphone, that already exists on all Apple's home pc's God Apple's cheap.
