Boot up hangs at 'verifying DMI Pool Data'

Hi,

I was recently infected with a rootkit virus and underwent the extensive process to remove it from my computer (successfully, thanks to this very site/malware forum). About 5 days later I am now unable to boot up my PC past the 'verifying DMI Pool Data' window. I've no idea if the two are connected, but it seemed too coincidental. I have done the various base level recommendations to BIOS and CMOS, etc.

I'm a comp novice trying to learn, but have no idea where to go from here. I did not build this or anything. I was infected, cleaned it, used it virus free and fully functional for about 5 days and now it won't boot up.

If malware, can you guess at the vector? Was it hiding in software already on your storage? Or was it lurking at a site you visited? So, if you nuke your storage (repartition and full reformat) take steps to be sure something nasty cannot sneak in again.
