Can public Wi-Fi and a wired LAN workgroup be active simultaneously in Win7

Hi,
My crossover-cable wired lan between a win 7 and a miniXP booted laptop can't be changed to a "home" from a "public" connection. Both the wifi and and lan show up as "public". The former because I'm connected to the internet via a meraki mesh. Unlike the status of my wifi, which is blue and thus changeable, the status of my lan is typeset black as regular text. Now when I activate file-sharing, I give the whole neighborhood access to my computer. Is there a way to separate the networks and make the files of the remote show up in Explorer without disconnecting the wifi?
