Cannot Boot up Windows XP, I get a black screen

I use Windows XP Home Edition and now everytime I try to boot up I don't get the blue log in screen. Instead, I get a black screen with the pointer arrow. Sometimes this black screen has the prompt:

"The instruction at "0x77f580c9" referenced memory at "0x00880370". The memory could not be "read"."

Other times, when I reach the black screen, it automatically restarts and asks me if I want to go into Safemode.

I have gone into safemode to do System Restore and that didn't work. I have tried running virus scans, but the programs will not start up.

Open up the case and make sure all your cables are properly connected etc. This kind of thing often causes these errors,
