Can't start Laptop, help....

I can't start my laptop. Acer, Windows XP.

It froze oneday and rebooted into a light blue 'checking file system' screen, which itself freezes and when you reboot you go straight into the light blue screen again. It's a vicious circle...

Any ideas to fix this would be appreciated. Thanks

your hard drive is messed up. Do you have a windows CD to repair it?

Have you tried bashing f8 and booting in safe mode?
(the light blue screen is called a bsod(blue screen of death))
Write down or take a picture of the bsod and post it, well help ya further.

It wasn't BSOD, when I said blue screen I meant the light blue scan disk screen that happens when you don't shut your pc down properly.

I tried F8 with 'last known good' and 'boot in safe mode/com prompt' and both failed. Safe mode kept freezing at the same file each time 'ati*.sys' from memory, was a couple of days ago. So I assumed it was a graphics card problem, even though I thought safe mode didn't load these drivers.

Anyhow, I've rebuilt the laptop, all was not lost apart from all the files , but don't worry it wasn't my laptop and I even got a tip for 'fixing' it ha ha ha.
