A giant theme park opened in Guizhou, China over the weekend. The resort is called “Oriental Science Fiction Valley” (OSFV) and has 35 SciFi-based attractions.

What sets the park apart from other amusement venues is that all of the rides are in VR. Visitors will be spending most of their time wearing a headset. Even the rollercoasters utilize the technology.

Another interesting and unique characteristic of OSFV is its Gundam-style statues. Throughout the resort, there are various manga-looking life-size robots. There is even one that towers over the park that is quite a sight.

The enormous statue stands over 173 feet and weighs 700 tons. The robot is the second tallest structure in the facility and can easily be seen from a distance outside the park. It even comes equipped with a bungee-jumping platform.

Well, you have to admire their cleverness for doing this on the cheap and making it seem like a big deal.

So instead of having rides like what you'd see at Disneyland, Universal or Six Flags costing millions of dollars, what they did is put in a bunch of kiddie rides. The customer straps on a VR headset to give them a grand visual while they get a little physical motion from the kiddie ride. You could do that at home spinning yourself in a chair with a VR headset on.

Oh yeah, they have big robot statues too. :D

So to summarise your comment - small investment and huge return.. Can't fault that! I guess Disneyland, Universal and Six Flags could learn something here especially in this hard economy..

So you look at videos such as this one, and think - China is like 10 years ahead of the curve. And then you decide to visit it, as a tourist, only to see it lag 50 years behind, in terms of the overall social utility.

Their communistic government loves creating the false perception of the country and its progress, just like Soviet Union used to do when commies ruled it.

It will be interesting to see the outcome in 10 years. While not widely published, China has had more than their fair share of high tech failures. Their intention is great but their follow through is lacking. Time will tell if this is just another one ......

So the 'communistic' government is behind this theme park? They sure fooled me with that false perception thing too! Dang crafty commies...
