Computer and printer not communicating

I own an HP Compaq which currently runs Windows 10. My printer is a Lexmark 9500 series multi-function model. I believe it was manufactured around 2007. Connection is by USB cable. When the printer was first installed it communicating properly with my computer but recently I've started getting a "Communication not available" error message. So far I've tried all of the recommended troubleshooting steps: Disconnecting ad reconnecting the power cable and the USB cable, and restarting the computer. I haven't gone into the Windows 10 firewall (another recommended step) to make sure that the firewall isn't blocking communication, because I don't know how to access it.

Can anyone offer a suggestion? How do I access the Windows 10 firewall? Also, this printer has wireless capability. What is involved in setting up my computer for wireless communication with the printer, and would that help matters? :D
