Forward-looking: At the start of the year, UK-based game developer Slightly Mad Studios said it would be challenging the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 successors with “the most powerful console ever made.” Now, the company has released concept images of the machine and its controller, which looks pretty interesting.

Slightly Mad CEO Ian Bell posted images of the ‘Mad Box’ on Twitter. They’re only concepts, which means the final product may change drastically, but they give an idea of the company's ambitious plans.

The controller uses an Xbox-style setup, with thumbsticks in the upper left and lower right sections and a D-pad between them. But what really differentiates it from Microsoft’s design is the touchscreen in the center. Judging from the images, the idea is for it to display contextual information and graphics based on the game being played. A driving title (presumably) shows the speed, gear, and boost on the controller, while another game—likely an FPS—highlights the respawn button.

Additionally, one picture shows a keyboard on the controller’s screen, which, assuming it’s implemented well, could make typing a lot easier than the current methods used by consoles. In another post, Bell points out the controller’s precision triggers and rear paddles.

The console itself is equally stylish, boasting plenty of curves and lights, which could change colors to match the controller.

Bell said the Mad Box will have specs equivalent to a “very fast PC 2 years from now” and come with next-gen VR capabilities. He added that unlike current consoles, online features might be free, and they could see players earn credits that can be turned into real money through ads.

The Mad Box isn't scheduled to launch for another “three-plus years,” and there’s no guarantee that the project won’t fall apart before then, so we’ll have to wait and see how it all pans out.

No interest. The PS5 and X4 will deliver all I need, and then some. (I didn't even go for Microsoft this generation but may again the future due to their cloud computing initiatives which might bring some good titles out, we will see).

Why do you think the PS5 will deliver all that you need?
Only that the PS5 is on the way is confirmed, all specifications are still unknown.
 
Sounds a bit hooky to me, like just another marketing campaign to stir up interest in something that will never be produced ......

Why do you need any information? Just go straight for the conclusion.
 
Looks a little uncomfortable, expensive (a complex cutout touchscreen), and probably either has a small battery life (touchscreen) or weighs quite a bit (big battery).
And unless they make their plugin/SDK super friendly to work with (since there aren't big incentives for the platform), most of the time the cool features will go unused...

I called up MICROSOFT and gave them a better name, call it CASEY ANTHONY Box. The most craziest console. The graphics will kill you.
 
I hope they succeed...but I don't know. MS and Sony have HUGE budgets to guarantee success even if supposedly losing money on console sales. Also they have an agenda to zombify the population, so profits are not the first priority.
Edit: Project Cars 2 surely would be free. :)
 
Anyone willing to shell out the money for this "console" would just start researching pc building and realize that its much cheaper and better. Steamboxes have all failed and were even removed from the store/production yet were still more powerful that this generations consoles. It honestly looks like one of the various kickstarter scams with bogas hardware claims and takes pre orders but never delivers(Smach Z, Ouya, OTON X, WAZO... I can go on.
 
We have enough consoles, PS5 XBONE and PC
We need games.

Bring out exclusive games for us to buy your mini-pc

The PS4 delivered all the games that I wanted to play this generation and did it better than the Xbox One for cross platform games as well, due to approx 33% more GPU power.

With the exception of Halo 5 and the Master Chief Collection, the Xbox platform had no games I cared to play and I was easily able to skip Halo 5.

These IP's will continue into the PS5, whereas Microsoft has nothing (at this point) that would make me want to move. That could change of course, but to date, I see no reason to go back onto the Xbox platform.
