CPU way too hot

Hey guys!

I am a bit lost :(

My computer keeps crashing while gaming (only then), it just freezes and repeats the last sound played over and over. Additionally, after a crash it takes like 4-5 minutes till it boots (It is stuck in the Windows 10 loading screen and IS working, the circle is moving). The normal rate is 30 seconds.

Here my specs:
Win 10
MSI Mainboard MS-7846
Intel i7 - 4790k Quad 4 ghz
Cooler: 100W Deepcool Theta21-PWM
Nvidea GeForce GTX 1060 3GB
16 gig DDR 3 Ram

So I did some tests, ram check, opened the case to see if everything looks fine etc. etc. etc.

After I checked the temperature, I was stunned that it is 60ish in idle and 100ish while gaming.
I got new thermal paste and it brought it down by maybe 10 degrees in idle... Here some screens after I applied the paste.

What I did:

- New thermo paste
- Checked the fan
- Checked for drivers

So the computer is already doing it a while and it is not a new behavior. I know you have a million threads like this on here, I honestly did not find a solution tho. I hope someone can help me! When you need more Info, just ask away! PC didn't crash after I changed the thermo paste, however, the temperature is more then worrying me! Glad for any input!

Kind regards

The problem will be with your thermal paste and your heatsink fan cooler.
What brand of thermal paste did you use on it ?
When you applied the grease did you put 4 pee size drops on each corner and a little in the middle ?
How long have you owned that heatsink fan, for 4.0ghz+ deepcool doesn't do a great job unless it has very good grease.

Bought the best paste I could get from Cooler MAster: Mastergel maker, 11 W/m.k

Put the thermo paste in the middle and spread it. I mean its not my first pc, I needed to redo the thermo paste a few times in my life, never had issues after.
The Fan is as old as the PC, 2 years.

IDK, I can check if I did it wrong, but my bet would be on something else.

Thanks for the effort tho

Another thing that can cause issues that's often overlooked is the PSU. Can you provide the brand. model and wattage of your PSU? Thanks.

1. that chip was known to get extremely hot. 2. try a copper cooler with pipes or a solid copper base!

I don't know where you got that info from but that's completely wrong. I have the exact same CPU. The Tcase max is 74.4°C before the thermal cut off takes place. So no it doesn't run hot. I also have the Hyper 212 Evo on it. Works great.

A couple of things I see here....1 - the aftermarket cooler is subpar at best. I would suggest, bang for buck, is the Hyper 212 Evo. 2 - - for thermal paste I would suggest Atric Silver and use the "rice" method. 3 - the CPU itself could be going bad...but I doubt it.

that chip should run not hotter than 65c with a hyper212 max load. if your running 70's with copper, then something is wrong.

Learn to read, I never said anything about my temps....that's the Tcase value, the threshold limit...the thermal cut off of the CPU. That was just proof of your wrong information...they don't run hot. See link.

My temps...using PC right now are as follows: System: 30°C; PCH: 32°C; CPU: 24°C. This is from HWiFO

At idle it's at 26°C, 28°C, 22°C, respectively....at full load I never run above 45°C, 45°C, 50°C respectively. That's banging Crysis 3 out at full max settings.

Have you tried swapping out for a different video card? My 1060 recently started to create similar issues. I swore it was the PSU or the MB but I decided to try a different card (older 650ti boost) and the computer booted and ran normally. If you have another card, give it a shot, it's at least easy to do.

look at the links on the original post. thats what I answered. he is running way way too hot. now if your going to send him a better cooler, then by all means, go for it. Telling me what the chip does, will not solve his overheating issues.

Oops, my bad. I think I got some posts mixed up this morning.

I'm not sure what you are applying there but ok.

I did find this: https://communities.intel.com/message/260210#260210 to get back on topic. Something for the OP to look into.

Sounds like you may be overvolting your CPU ... I would go into the BIOS and check that the cpu is not getting too + voltage. (1.212v IDK ??)
Also rocket league and counter strike go are not gfx heavy or CPU heavy, is your case getting enough air? is your gfx card pushing hot air onto your cpu? Even if it was going overtemp it should just throttle rather than crash.
I would unplug and replug all your leads , power sata cpu as it could be fractional contact induced by thermal expansion

the chip runs hot on stock coolers, not aftermarket coolers with good copper. I forget to put that part in. sorry.
