My dell inspiron 1420 will not turn on; when I push the power button it begins to turn on, with the power light and the hard drive light turning on with all 3 leds on but then the hard drive light goes off and the only led light that stays on is the caps lock light, which blinks for about thirty seconds then the entire computer goes black again. Any suggestions?

Hi

fault can sometimes be caused by things such as bad memory or an internal overheat problem, dependant on how techie you are, it would require the stripping of the unit to check such things.

memory is usually accessible from underneath the unit, remove the memory boards and reseat them, if it still doesnt work then it would require the strip and check...

Laptops have lots of screws and can be difficult to strip down, Dell do offer strip down instructions on their site for each unit.

Hard drive has failed. You can still rescue data as a slave in another install, but the boot sectors are gone... usually the magnetic material bubbles up from age or heat, then defective material is thrown off by centrifugal force..

if it was the HDD raybay it would boot into the BIOS and say HDD failure or similar...however as a test remove the HDD from the unit, again they are usually accessible from underneath the laptop.
