Desktop graphics card sales reach lowest point since 2005

After postponing my gpu purchase for more than a year because of the "mining-craze" prices, I just gave up on it after almost feeling physically sick when I saw where the prices are going with the new gen. Since I also wanted to buy myself a bike, I just merged my gpu and bike budget and bought a much better bike before Christmas and haven’t regretted my decision for a second, december was quite warm, can’t wait for spring to come! I’ll just buy some used gpu, there’s no new game in sight I would wanna play anyway.

The crazy part is that the 4090 are still selling like hot cakes. My 3 local Microcenters get in about 25 units weekly or so and get sold out instantly. The 7900 xtx are sold out as well, but the 7900xt and 4080s are still available on shelves 100s in stock at the time of this post. I believe once the threshold of the demand and stock of the 4090s and 7900xtx are satisfied we will likely see a price reduction in about a quarter or 2 especially in for the 4080 and 7900xt respectively.

The 4090 is the only good "value" in that it offers a massive performance boost compared to it's predecessor without costing much more money. Let alone 50% more like the 4080.

The issue with that is it's compared to the 3090, which was an absolute trash value for consumers at $1500. Plus it only emphasizes how BS the pricing on the cheaper card is.

I recently upgraded from an overclocked 4790K (4.7ghz) to a 7950X and it feels like I upgraded my GPU as well, even though I still use the 5700XT. All games I've tried so far are soo much smoother and I'm now able to raise game settings that I could not before. So the CPU was holding back the 5700XT in some instances, which I had suspected, just not to the extreme that it had.
For example. I can now run project cars with 31 opponents and lose no fps. I just couldn't get anywhere near that before. So yeah, I'd like a high end GPU but won't be buying at the stupid prices they're currently offered at.

It's a balancing act. Although from a purely gaming perspective the 7600x would have been better suited for that graphics card and money saved for a better gpu to get even a better delta gain.

My friend was eyeing the 7900xtx before launch based on hype and AMD prelaunch marketing and after launch he decided to go with the 4090. Lol he was showing me pictures of the rumored titan I'm like don't even go there !😂.

Maybe if there was inventory at the price points people were willing to pay they would be buying them. I set aside $2k for either a new build or my final AM4 upgrade after the holidays, but I think at this point I am going to live with what I got, maybe find a 3DFX card for my Windows 98 machine and put it towards a new smoker. Lol

Yes, everyone's needs are different but there's no matching things up, needed with me. The GPU has been on its way out for over a year in my mind and I wouldn't even consider a 7600x. Gaming is a small part of a multitude of things I do with my PC. So the more cores the better. The 5700X would have been upgraded when the 3080 and 6800XT 1st dropped, if it had not been for the price gouging immediately after they went on sale. I'm not on any budget. It's just that I will not spend money on anything that I feel is overpriced for what it is. If they suddenly jacked the price of a snickers bar up to €5, I may want a snickers bar, but I'm not stupid enough to pay €5 for one.

Most people that got a 4090 are doing so because they are pushing 4k. I don't think they need or care about your pity lol.
Thats great and all, whoop go 4K but... what was wrong with a 3090/3090TI? It also can do 240Hz 4K? Why would anyone want to pay that kind of money for something that is already out there that can do the same thing! It blows my mind.
So the question is if a 3090 and 4090 can both to 240Hz, what are you getting for $£1800

Good for you that your 2070 still does fine at low resolutions, not everyone is you though.
Some of us prefer high resolution and high refresh rates.
Plan for next year is to buy one for that purpose since I've already got the monitor for it, and the 3080 will go into the spare rig I have sitting around.
I didn't tell you the res but it 1440 144Hz, honestly if it wasn't silly money I'd be jumping on the hype train. Who knows maybe next year the prices will drop to around 800-1000 and then I'll get a 4090 and try and burn my house down! But would rather wait and cause NVidva pain for the absolute day light robbery they think that they can push on to the consumers in the middle of a financial crisis.
Good luck with your plans

There is nothing wrong with a 3090/3090ti at 4k they just struggle more to run that more than a 4090. You will have to move settings down to push 240hz on ampere and less so on a 4090 due to DLSS 3.

And for the record I'm on a 6800XT I don't own a 4090.
