Any program you download off the internet may contain malware. A good rule of thumb is not to install anything you are offered in popup windows or ad banners - if a software maker can afford and needs advertising then it means their business methods are fishy.
No video file can carry any extra software so if all you downloaded was a movie file then nothing happened.
To play DivX files in Windows Media Player you need to download the DivX codec. Get the minimal free version from www.divx.com
Do not install the DivX Player they offer you.

Slower speeds in what? In general?

It wouldn't hurt to run some spyware detection / removal tools, such as Spybot - Search & Destroy, Ad-Aware and HijackThis.

Most of the "Windows OS" section threads are about spyware these days, just read some to get an idea of what to do and what's going on.

No need to take things that literally.
Just download the free version. Install only the codec and nothing else.
From here if you like: http://www.divx.com/divx/download/
