Internet Explorer 11 was only available for Windows 8.1 until yesterday, but as of today anyone with Windows 7 can download and install the browser too. Although it's not the finished code, this Preview for Developers includes many of the features that will be included in the final release and are currently available on Windows 8.

Among the new features is native decoding of JPG images using the GPU in real time, which allows faster page loads and less stress on other computer components. There is also support for HTML5 link pre-fetching and pre-rendering. These two features allow developers to anticipate where you're going and have those pages ready.

Aside from a few new features there's been a lot of overhauling under the hood to improve general performance.  According to Microsoft, IE11's "Chakra" JavaScript engine is 4% faster compared to IE10 in Windows 7. As expected, there is also support for hardware accelerated 3D web graphics and professional quality video experiences on the web through standards like MSE (Media Source Extensions) and EME (Encrypted Media Extensions).

If you're interested and have Windows 7 installed in your computer, you don't have to wait any longer to give Internet Explorer 11 a try. Just click here to download, either the 32 or 64-bit variant.

This is by far the most bizarre IE distribution strategy ever. They offer it only to Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 users, but not to Windows 8 users?

I tried to install it on Windows 8, just in case, and the installer said: "Setup can't continue because a more recent version of Internet Explorer is installed on your computer". And my version of Internet Explorer is 10.

It is weird, but with 8.1 being free and with a lot of improvements over 8... well, nobody's going to stay on 8, so I'm sure they just don't want to bother testing for it.

Installed it and the text is horrible. It's too thick and aliased. Reminds me of Firefox a few versions ago.

IE needs a serious UI overhaul. Like yesterday.

Otherwise, it's actually a fast browser; faster than Firefox for sure. Can't tell the diffidence between Chrome.

Sounds like MS are giving Win 8 a vote of no confidence.
