Extreme FPS-drops in games

No never. But the flicker in this test was just the window maximizing to full screen. It flickers because my second monitor is an extend, not a mirror. It turns off my second monitor for a second while full-screening.
I've never had any flickering/black screen ingame

hmm well I g2g for tonight il be back on tommorow I currently am usualy getting black screen myself but this home pc is still a pentium 4 geforce 6200 1 gig ram which was my 2006 setup this summer im getting a new upgrade tho hopefully il get the intel g620 which is one of the cheapest and which outperforms every cpu near its price for a 50 $ price and a new 550 ti now I really dont know my psu myself though im probably changing it since its only 30$ nowadays for a 600watt

Ok so I ran the DX10 test seperatly this time, and it shows me an avarage of 47,5 fps. It switches between 40 and 55 so that seems right.

marty one thing before I go try testing your gaming but turn off your second monitor and test if theirs any difference I belive your psu might just not have enough power to power up the second screen post if u see any difference

Ok for now it appears the issue is over. I can't be sure because the drops don't occur on a regular basis, but more random.
This is certainly very helpful info though, as it does indeed point to an under-powered setup.
Thanks for today, I'll see what I can do about another/a new PSU

All right, I'm re-opening this.

Basically I've done some more research and found the following things:
  • An underpowered system (more specifically GPU) crashes or gets in restart loops. It doesn't lower fps for short periods of time.
  • An PSU not giving enough power would manifest itself the moment it gets inserted in it's system, not some weeks later.
  • A bad PSU also does not cause lowered framerates or lagging, it causes the computer to crash, the screen to flicker frequently and badly or the computer to restart itself.
Above points are the things I read the most on other forums and information-websites. Personally I'm not 100% sure that these things are true, but to me they make more sense. I'd like input on wether above things are true, and if they are, what my problem could be.

well if were reopening this one more thing when did u get the graphics card

do u have any support number on the box/warranty if so post

I got this card (together with the cpu) in early november last year.
I don't really know what you mean by "support number", please explain.

well who sold u the card you should have his number right which shop talk to him the graphics card should have a warranty test it with him if it is not being well performing tell him to replace it and btw when you have a graphics card you never get full fps from it if you have a weak cpu which I dont think you should suffer that

If the card is faulty (which I doubt, because it has performed perfectly up until a few weeks ago) I can allways return it. The warranty on it is 1yr so I've got time. I also don't think my cpu is a bottleneck because it's a high-end cpu with a high-end graphics card.

Before I return or buy something I want to be absolutely sure what the problem is before I go and buy useless parts.

BUMP

Hi there, I have the same problem. ALL my games (about 20 ranging in age) run smooth on high 1080p but then drop to 10-25 fps for a few seconds. on some games this takes 20 minutes, some every 4 mins or so. this is a very frustrating problem that after a google search seems is not uncommon. it also seems to not be overheating, hardware issue or driver issue. its a mystery!

GOOD THING THERES TECHIES!

can we get some more support here please no offence but I dont think techgamer is understanding this properly.
plz and thankyou :)

Are you all running Vista / 7 / 8?

Do you all have slide shows as backgrounds? Who is using seconds screens? I've got 2 machines in my house which both have had similar issues, first one was due to adding a second screen (GTX560ti1GB) and it cannot cope changing wallpaper while gaming on something like Battlefield 3.

The other was a machine with a high res screen (2560x1440) and a GTX780 but for some reason the fps in Battlefield 3 would go from 60fps to under 20 when ever a massive areas of the map was all on screen at once (or in a jet or heli) this turned out the RAM was at fault since the computer only had 4GB and the moment it went over what was available and going to the page file (it didn't have an SSD) then it would start to struggle, once it finished doing what ever it was doing (usually I'd die and get back in the heli again) it would be fine.

I'd like to know if you guys have notice it happen in particular parts of the game or if something in the background (such as the wallpaper changing) causing it to slow.
