Fans are bringing Unreal Tournament 2004 back to life with Epic's blessing

It’s kind of poetic that Unreal Tournament 2004 is getting a second life thanks to the community rather than Epic. The engine that shaped half the industry gets preserved not by the billion-dollar company, but by the modders who grew up with it.

OMG I loved this game to death in its time!!! Because of how fun it was to play, the game modes, the vehicles, mutators, and the graphics. The maps, characters and weapons felt so detailed, it was gorgeous to look at.
OTOH, I booted it up a couple years ago and it felt kinda too simple, as in it's mostly shooting at each other and nothing else on top to think about, and lost interest rather quickly 😅 modern perspective has ruined this one for me, same as for Quake 3.
However, UT99 nowadays has a stronger, more mature and immersive vibe for me now.

Any easy solution to get UT2004 or UT3 installed and running on Win 11 today? I'd love to show off to my 8yrs old. I found some guides online but not sure which one is to be trusted. This needs some weird 3rd party packages/patches to be installed which puts me off...

Just installed it from Steam, you'll get a prompt to update DirectX and to install .Net2.0/3.0/3.5 then it just launches and works.

You will need patches to get modern screen resolutions working though, the game supports 16:10 aspect ratios from standard, but didn't support 16:9.

what do you mean in Steam? I searched for it in the store and nothing comes up. Perhaps if you have been having it in your library from a long time ago, but I see no UT title anywhere in Steam.

Ah... good point, I've had it in Steam for many years now, forgot they took it off the store.
