i've been trying to fix an error message about the Generic Host Process on my college student daughter (this means she will never listen to a partent).

while trying to fix, the computer seezes each time i boot normal. when i try to follow the "updated 8 steps to heaven", i cannot proceed in normal mode.

After downloading all of the programs suggested in the 8 steps, i used msconfig, and and did a diagnostic boot.

with that, i can work fairly well in windows (no internet of course).

I completed:
Step 1. am using symantec endpoint. here are the problems it found on 12-3:

Both look good :)
Any particular reason, you ran them in safe mode?

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
  1. Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  2. Close any open browsers.
  3. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
    NOTE1. If Combofix asks you to install Recovery Console, please allow it.
    NOTE 2. If Combofix asks you to update the program, always do so.
    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.
  4. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  5. When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  6. Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt"
**Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall
**Note 2 for AVG users: ComboFix will not run until AVG is uninstalled as a protective measure against the anti-virus. This is because AVG "falsely" detects ComboFix (or its embedded files) as a threat and may remove them resulting in the tool not working correctly which in turn can cause "unpredictable results". Since AVG cannot be effectively disabled before running ComboFix, the author recommends you to uninstall AVG first.
Use AVG Remover to uninstall it: http://www.avg.com/us-en/download-tools
We can reinstall it when we're done with CF.
**Note 3: If you receive an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion", restart computer to fix the issue.

Make sure, you re-enable your security programs, when you're done with Combofix.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
NOTE.
If, for some reason, Combofix refuses to run, try one of the following:
1. Run Combofix from Safe Mode.
2. Delete Combofix file, download fresh one, but rename combofix.exe to your_name.exe BEFORE saving it to your desktop.
Do NOT run it yet.
Please download and run the below tool named Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) which may help allow other programs to run.
There are 4 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
Vista and Win7 users need to right click Rkill and choose Run as Administrator
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.
Rkill.com
Rkill.scr
Rkill.pif
Rkill.exe
  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • If it does not work, repeat the process and attempt to use one of the remaining links until the tool runs.
  • Do not reboot until instructed.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.
Once you've gotten one of them to run, immediately run your_name.exe by double clicking on it.
If normal mode still doesn't work, run BOTH tools from safe mode.
In case #2, please post BOTH logs, rKill and Combofix.
DO NOT make any other changes to your computer (like installing programs, using other cleaning tools, etc.), until it's officially declared clean!!!
combofix & rkill
I'm using safemode because the computer hangs up when i try to load in normal mode. yesterday i was able to use msconfig to load normal, but protected mode, but not today.
i ran rkill and imediately ran glhfix per instructions. the logs are below. then i tried to log onto techspot from that computer in safe mode. got to internet, could navagate, but when enter it i got the message:
"ie encountered a problem with an addon and needs to close. name msxml3dll, description msxml3.0 sp10.
when i tried to disable that add on, and open techspot again, i got the message that techspot neded msxml3.dll to load, and closed ie. a circle.
so here are the logs:
rkill:
This log file is located at C:\rkill.log.
after all of this i did try to open in normal, but got hung up on the "windows xp" screen.
Combofix log looks good now.
Let's try something...
Go Start>Run (Start Search in Vista), type in:
msconfig
Click OK (hit Enter in Vista).
Click on Startup tab.
Click Disable all
IMPORTANT! In case of laptop, make sure, you do NOT disable any keyboard, or touchpad entries.
Click Services tab.
Put checkmark in Hide all Microsoft services
Click Disable all.
Click OK.
Restart computer in Normal Mode.
NOTE. If you use different firewall, than Windows firewall, turn Windows firewall on, just for this test, since your regular firewall won't be running.
If you use Windows firewall, you're fine.
Will it boot to normal mode now?
msconfig
Yes, that is how i did most of the scans (but not the combofix and rkill.
it works, but no internet.
I have a "Windows Vista Ultimate" upgrade that has been here for several years, and never used. might it be easier to just upgrade to Vista on this machine?
it works, but no internet.
I want you to boot in normal mode, using my settings and post couple of logs for me...
1. Click Start>Run (Start>"Start search" in Vista).
2. Type in (or copy and paste):
cmd /c ping google.com>%temp%\$.$&notepad %temp%\$.$
and press Enter.
3. Notepad will open.
4. Copy all text in Notepad ([Ctrl-A], then [Ctrl-C]), and then post it (paste = [Ctrl-V]) in your next reply.
=====================================================================
Go Start>Run ("Start search" in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK (hit Enter in Vista).
At Command Prompt, paste this:
ipconfig /all>c:\ipconfig_all.txt&notepad c:\ipconfig_all.txt&exit
Hit Enter.
Copy and paste what you see in Notepad into a Reply here.
$$ & ip log
i ran the two logs and will paste them in a minute. i think i misspoke (typed) when i was talking about the "normal protected" mode. i was able to get there a few days ago. and from there also able to open IE, and can navigate to other sites.
But, when i tried to go to TECHSPOT to post these logs, IE closed. the same error message this whole thing started with.
I also reran Combofix to see if it would complete itself in normal protected mode.
then tried to get to techspot again, still the minute techspot looks for a dll file, it automatically closes IE.i belive that Techspot is looking for msxml3.dll. and not finding it, or it is corupted.
even though it doenst show i did try to load windows defender before i ran these, but i coule not get it to load
OK. The very first log (ping) shows us that your connection is perfectly fine.
This is your browser, which doesn't work for some reason.
We'll try to find out why.
Meanwhile, I suggest, you install Firefox and see, if you can use it in normal mode.
Combofix looks clean.
Let me know about Firefox and also...
Close IE.
Go Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools, and click on Internet Explorer (no add-ons). Same problem?
the outcome
Broni:
An update. First of all thank you for working through this with me. I did try the firefox and still had the problems, because the problem was with the mxml3.dll, creating the "host" problem. everytime i tried to repair the xp, i failed.
finally over the weekend, i started to install a Vista Premium update (yes, i personally hate Vista, but it's my daughter's computer, and i had one here [because i live here near Microsoft land, and get free things from friends from time to time]).
So i started to update, but the computer would not update from XP to Vista because of no "boot record" (probably part of my problem). So i copied everything she might need to an external hard drive, and started the "clean installation" of Vista. Just about done now, it was a fairly old copy of Vista, so the process of all of the updates, i'm not up to sp1, takes a while.
at least in the process, i am not receiving the service host messages, and can get back to my work.
Again, thank you for your effort. I'm not very technically advanced, but i have been with microsoft products since DOS 1, and Word 1.0. and it seems like every few years run up against a problem similar to this one.
such is life. Thank you again.
