TL;DR: Mozilla on Tuesday published version 82.0 of the Firefox web browser which introduces a number of enhancements and is said to be faster than ever. It also addresses a handful of security vulnerabilities, the majority of which are classified as “high” risk.

According to Mozilla, websites that use flexbox-based layouts now load 20 percent faster with the new Firefox. What’s more, restoring a previous browsing session is 17 percent quicker than before, letting you pick up where you left off without too much disruption. And for Windows users specifically, opening a new window is now 10 percent faster.

Watching videos with Firefox 82 is now “more delightful” thanks to an improved Picture-in-Picture button that is easier to locate due to a new look and position. There’s also a new keyboard shortcut for Mac users to enable PiP (Option + Command + Shift + Right bracket).

In Windows, Firefox can now take advantage of DirectComposition for hardware decoded video to improve CPU and GPU usage during playback. On laptops, this can lead to improved battery life, we’re told.

Mozilla’s Firefox was once a major player in the browser wars but that was many moons ago. According to NetMarketShare, Firefox’s desktop market share currently sits at 7.60 percent. StatCounter has Firefox down to just 4.09 percent worldwide. Both firms have Chrome outpacing the competition by a wide margin, at 69.19 percent and 66.34 percent, respectively.

Too bad they still suck at tab management ever since they killed off Tab Mix Plus. Infinite scroll on a media site: good, infinite scroll through your open tabs: infuriating. I guess I'll just stick with Waterfox and Vivaldi.

This update looks like it finally fixes Windows native media controls (was only pause/play before this).

Sure took them long enough. Been waiting for the fix to make it to the public version so I don't have to switch to FF just to go to the next song...

Sounds interesting. Can you elaborate on what infinite scroll through your open tabs and tab mix plus did for those unaware?

Firefox should help the developer of Flashgot and Tab Mix Plus to build compatible versions with its new Firefox.

I prefer to use both Firefox and Chrome. I am kinda tied to Chrome because of saved passwords, work related stuff and better integration with Android.

tab mix plus added tons of options for tabs and context menu. they've been screwing addon developers for five to eight years now. Last blow was when they went webextensions for addons to make the browser more secure.

it's still active but nowhere near as powerful as it once was https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/tab-mix-plus-webextension/

not sure what he means with infinite scroll in regards to tabs. mine don't infinite scroll

@baroquer
dream on

I have no idea how any sane person can use chrome. extensions to manage tabs in chrome:
"This extension will allow you to set a limit on the number of tabs you can have open in Chrome at once. If you often find your…"

Tab mix plus allowed you to set the tab rows (3 works pretty well) and width, with a whole lot of other options. As for the "infinite scroll" part, I may have exaggerated on that a bit. Basically last time I really used Firefox was when Tab mix plus actually worked and I probably had 100+ tabs open. So when I tried this latest update I had to hit the scroll button for a good while for it to scroll through all the open tabs from the saved session. At that point I closed it because it's pretty useless.

that is how I used to roll xD
god I miss those times. I had my TMP set to select tab after 50ms when hovering over it. so basically I never clicked.

You can still use it in Waterfox, but it's basically old Firefox that gets monthly updates, hopefully for any security vulnerabilities. So.... I still use it at home, but at work I had to switch to Vivaldi with the grouped tabs, which is good, but no TMP.

You can do that via this trick

Thanks but I've migrated to that Tab center redux addon. I'll scroll through his list, maybe he has something else useful

"/* Tab reordering will not work and can't be made to work */"
yikes. even less useful
