Get ready for TV-style commercials in console and PC games

With so many choices in the gaming space, and with the ability to just ignore all new titles and still be able to play great games I already own but barely have time to play as is, I will not partake in any game that is going to force me to watch ads, even if it is for 10 seconds. If this is going to become a regular thing, this industry can go eff itself from that day forward. I'm sure the majority of us have back catalogues on multiple systems that we need to catch up on that'll keep us busy for the next couple years.

This is just BS.
As if the cost of games, plus DLCs, plus micro-transactions, plus loot-boxes, weren't enough.
Gamming is becoming such a cluster F*** of anti-consumer practices.

I'd say that wherever there is money, there is a clusterf.... of anti-consumer practices... ;-)
Maybe this is pushing it a little, but not by far IMHO.

Thats it, I'm out, I'm done.

This "idea" would die quickly if just one thing happened.
Gamers completely ignored games with commercials.

That will take making a stand though so, good luck with that.
have you paid any attention to gamers, they stand up for nothing, fortnite or CoD literally be skynet and gamers would happily flock to their doom.

if anything, I bet they'd defend the moves and swear it helps cause "mah free stuffs".

Someone should practise these ideas in the lives of the executives behind these companies.

Fantastic scenario:

Executive: *enters toilet and attempts to open zipper*

1 minute long un-skippable ad plays (ideally something with running liquids)

*zipper is openable*

Wow, most of the comment section doesn't seem to get that this is for F2P games (y'know, the type of game where you compromise for free entry)...

Anyways, as long as it stays in F2P games, I don't care.
Why? Because I know gamers can be pretty cheap but are also willing to put up with (some non-intrusive) ads if they didn't pay for the game. And if it annoys me, it's super easy to uninstall (since I didn't put a dime into it).

If they show up in paid games, then screw the developers/publishers that try getting away with it.

Need high priced games to make sense. There needs to be a mature Market that is willing to spend over $100 for large production games> this includes CGI tech etc.

"Given what happened with the Oculus Quest ads in Blaston and the NBA 2K21 outrage, one would assume studios won't add commercials to their paid-for games."

So, based on companies trying to screw consumers at every front, you assume they wont try this in full priced games? Did Rob Thubron have a stroke while writing this?

Wow, its almost like the same thing was said about microtransations a decade ago, and now $120 premium collector edition games are riddled with the stuff!

It's almost like...wait for it....the gaming industry is rife with greed, and this WILL make its way into fully priced games, likely as post launch updates so they can trick people into buying the game then spam them with ads.

But you know, those who are too dumb to comprehend history are doomed to repeat it.
Just don't buy the games with ads... simple!
We've already seen the likes of EA and activision release games, wait for all the glorious reviews and first two week sales, then push insane monetization bullshit in post launch updates. Avoiding games with these ads will be tough.
Consumers are slaves with an ever fleeting illusion of power.
I disagree. Slaves are those taken against their will and forced into servitude to someone else. Consoomers, OTOH, willingly embrace these tactics and will defend them when someone suggests that such practices are wholly unnecessary.

I hesitate to even call these people "human", as humans are supposed to be capable of critical thinking. Zombies would be a more appropriate title.

Case in point: this line: "Simulmedia claims its research shows players are willing to watch up to ten ads per day for some freebies. It also said that during the pilot campaign with F2P MOBA Smite, "players were much more likely (22%) to play a game and spend money within the game (11%), if they watched in-game ads that gave them access to more gaming perks." The only reason they are doing this is to profit even more from Gamers Consooming as much as possible instead of using an ounce of common sense.

This will only anger gamers period. One is getting bombarded nuke style with adds in this day n age we live in and we're sick of it. Even if it's on free games only cause they cannot dare to do it with paid games omg, one will opt to not play it instead, simple as that.

As I said, gamers can be pretty cheap with F2P games. There's a balance to be had, with neither side entitled to anything for free. If you don't like it, don't play it.

And last I chiecked, when devs get too greedy, they quickly get shot down by gamers. And then gamers tend to reward the devs who are generous.

EA might try putting ads in a paid game again, but they know they're on thin ice after the last time (and it was very public for others to see).

I get a better idea. What if the governments (listening to people wish) will ban all ads in all forms except on dedicated channels/room/environments? So that the people won't be bothered with crappy offers they do not wish to see?
Have ads on dedicated ad sites, have ads on Malls on a dedicated single room, have ads on a TV channel that is only for ads. Everyone looking for some product can go BY HIS OWN WILL to search between those ads.
No ads everywhere else! Anyone trying to advertise outside these boundaries and offend people with their abject ads is to be (financially) castrated!
Who is with me?

Well, you know how it goes, just when you thought you had that heroin habit under control, your dealer raises the price.

Well, if worst comes to worst, you can always dump the headphones, and go to the kitchen and grab a beer while the commercial plays..

Or, how about keeping another computer open to Techspot, and commiserate with your fellow addicts while they try to talk you out of your, (sorry "more"), money.

You can say what you like about watching TV reruns with endless ads for imaginary cures for prostate problems, but at least the damned TV remote has a mute button.

Ford has to close eight plants this summer, due to lack of semiconductors. I wonder if we'll still have to sit through the ads, or maybe they'll dial them back a bit. (Not bloody likely). They'll just charge double MSRP for the cars they do build. Sort of like they're doing with those whatchamacallits,.......oh yeah, video cards.

Hate to say it, but it might work. I mean, I don't watch live TV period because I don't want to watch 12 minutes of ads for 18 minutes of show (that's what shows are down to now..), and will certainly not play games where they stop dead to watch ads either. But...

My friend obsessively plays these games on the phone where.. as far as I can tell on the first one, you watch ad after ad to get "points", use the points to feed a dragon, use the remaining points to fight with neighbors to "steal" their points (...not using the dragon, I think the dragon is just there to guilt players into thinking they're "starving" their dragon if they don't play daily..), and neighbors steal your points.

Another one, this bowling game, he watches ad after ad for ball powerups and other powerups; then he flips off the phone (he flips his finger on the screen far faster and harder than necessary and it looks rude as hell), then swears when the ball just goes wherever. Pretty early on in this case, it got past the point where it was just bowling lanes with some bumpers and obstructions, the lanes and pin positions are so convoluted you can't be aiming the ball in any useful way, you're just flinging it forward then the game is deciding (usually) if you hit 8, 9, or 10 pins, you watch the other player either beat you or not (... rinse and repeat, they use 3 frames for a game against a competitor.) Then time for more ads!

So, I hate to say it, but if people are putting up with that on their phones, maybe they will on PC. I know I won't.

I would assume they would only be in F2P games but got knows these days

E... A... Their track record is such that sure, they'll start with F2P games. And if there isn't a torches and pitchforks response they'll go for budget/re-release titles next. Before you know it it'll be SOP for all their games.

Why am I not surprised that EA is first in line to implement this? After the cluster **** that was the Simcity reboot I've been boycotting EA. Well except for a friend convincing me that Anthem was going to be different... yeah... that.
Greed makes people do strange things. Extreme greed makes people become game publishers, or so it seems.

Then EA can build in an extra fee - pay a $29.99 a month fee to have any games through Origin be ad free. Pay to play a game, then pay more to have it ad free!

DUDE!?! Don't give them any ideas. Then again, I boycott EA so it won't effect me.
