Google’s Circle concept never quite took off but the company is trying its hand at social once more with a new app called Spaces. The app, available for Android and iOS, is designed to make it easier to share stuff from the web in group conversations by embedding Google Search, YouTube, and Chrome within the app.

The idea is you'll never have to switch back and forth between apps to share something -- Google had a similar pitch for Gboard, but whereas Gboard solves sharing, Spaces also lets you check whatever other people in the conversation are referencing without leaving the app, and is entirely focused around making connections around topics.

With Spaces all you need to do is start a topic, inside a few people via messaging, email, a social network or "whatever way you like." The app's search feature lets you pull up articles, videos, comments and images that were posted earlier in a thread.

Google says it will be setting up spaces for each developer session at I/O, which kicks off later this week, so attendees will be able to connect with Googlers at sessions they are interested in. The company promises there will be "a few surprises" for Spaces at its developers' conference but the app is live now.
