Google trials 5GB storage cap for new Gmail sign-ups without phone numbers

The takeaway: For most users, 15GB of free cloud storage is likely more than sufficient for an email account, but some new Gmail users may soon have to make do with just a third of that capacity. While existing accounts are not expected to be affected for now, the change could still draw criticism from users concerned about Google requesting additional personal information.

Google has recently begun testing a new policy in which users in certain regions who sign up for Gmail accounts receive only 5GB of free storage. Affected users must provide a phone number to upgrade to the standard 15GB plan at no additional cost.

The test came to light this week after Reddit users reported seeing a new splash page offering two free storage options when creating new email accounts. According to Android Authority, which received a statement from Google confirming the test, most complaints have originated from users in African countries. It remains unclear whether Google plans to expand the policy more broadly.

Google did not provide a reason for the policy, but it has already drawn accusations that the tech giant is attempting to encourage users to hand over more personal data. Privacy concerns have long led some users to "de-Google" their digital lives by switching to alternative services such as Proton Mail, DuckDuckGo, or the Vivaldi browser. Requiring phone numbers for Google accounts could provide yet another incentive to do so.

However, Gmail's new policy may also be an effort to strengthen account security and combat fraud. The splash page states that the company aims to increase storage capacity only once per user, suggesting it is trying to prevent people from repeatedly creating accounts to access additional free cloud storage. Phone numbers can also serve as account recovery options if access is lost or compromised.

Since the beginning of the year, Google has added more AI features to Gmail (to mixed reception), introduced a new username policy, and strengthened encryption measures.

Gmail Pro and Ultra subscribers can now access AI Overviews that summarize emails. Some users have also begun seeing an AI Inbox that automatically prioritizes messages based on factors such as recency, frequency of contact, and how users interact with emails.

Meanwhile, the ability to change usernames without creating a new account has proven to be one of the more popular additions. However, users are limited to one name change per year and a total of four changes overall. Google Workspace users on the company's Enterprise Plus plan have also recently gained the ability to send end-to-end encrypted messages through Gmail's mobile apps.

Gmail still allows creating new accounts without a phone number? I thought they had removed this a long time ago.

I remember when your ISP provided email was 20-50MB, hotmail was 100MB and then gmail (beta and invite only) came along offering a whopping 1GB.
Ever since I stopped caring, tbh I've forgotten that having to delete email to make space for more email was a thing I had to worry about.

LOL You made me realize I do not know if my longtime ISP offers email access.
Funny. Never wondered about that because Gmail.
As for deleting email...a few years back I deleted the first 1/3 of all the email generated/received in my entire Gmail history ( there's a trick to delete everything prior to <chosen date> ). I wanted to get rid of lots of ancient communications and adresses that were no longer relevant.
Currently I'm one of those prepped to move to Proton should Google pull a really bad stunt.
Not that Proton's got 100% clean hands. I suspect such companies no longer exist in these times.
"Acceptable" is probably the best I can hope for.

[/edit] Google probably knows my phone number though they've never said so.
I've always carefully shielded my home address and workplace from them. These things are none of their freaking business.

Proton will hand over metadata if requested through legal channels, they have done so numerous times.

However, since encryption works, they cant hand over your emails. Also, if you use a VPN whenever connecting to your proton, including their own proton VPN, that metadata will be useless.

The also allow CASH PAYMENTS, which is honestly shocking, and is the one 100% anonymous way to pay for the service.

Really their only issue I see is that whomever is managing their VPN is pulling from public DNS lists that are managed by political activists, because numerous sites that are *ahem* politically incorrect* are blocked on it, which is due to a small group that have been trying to delist archival sites for years now. For some reason Proton has not fixed this despite numerous requests, even though one of the selling points of their service is they dont block anything.

That being said, IDK what stunt you are waiting for. If you have a proton ready you should switch already. Google already has the proverbial knife in your gut, why wait for them to twist it?

Gmail used to have a 2GB limit and that is more than I have ever used, so 5GB or 15GB? Who cares..

Google's **** has not touched me (yet).
Ad platforms have no access to my machines and therefore I also don't care about being profiled as the tailored ads disappear before they reach my screens just like all the others.

Side note (it's a bit of a broken record but I'm not giving up on it) : if EVERYONE blocked ads Internet advertising and more than one of the businesses involved would DIE. That will make the world a better place people!
Strangely many say (pretend) they don't care that businesses steal parts of their precious monitor real estate.
It gets weirder : I've encountered several who believe bloicking ads is IMMORAL (yet sometimes complain about intrusive ads on sites they visit hehe).
They feel obliged to support businesses that CHOOSE the ad platform business model.
Weirdest: I once encountered a guy who said :"if I don't get to see ads, then how do I know what to buy?" My mouth fell open and it's still not fully closed.
Many still don't seem to realise ads don't show stuff and how to obtain it.
Besides that they're usually a bunch of lies most ads are designed to trick people into wanting the advertised item. Our own subconscious, weaponized by the immoral.
I need to do stuff now so I'm cutting my ad rant short, sorry people.

When I created three different google (one was forcefully taken by Google) emails well over fifteen years ago you gave a name and birthdate. To create a Google email address then, you didn't need to give your personal address, or phone number! Google is a corrupt, criminal outfit! Anyone, willingly courting these fools, have ROCKS for brains!!

AI summaries, AI inbox sorting, AI everything… meanwhile the feature a lot of people would celebrate most is still just a permanent button to unsubscribe from newsletters in one click.

15GB already feels tiny in 2026 after Gmail spent years quietly turning everyone’s inbox into a backup drive for memes, PDFs, and 48MP vacation photos.

Can't get a Google account without at least a phone number. This 5g thing is new, but before that google wants all your information, name address and phone number. Everyonce in a while they try to get my phone number and addres, in a way that looks like you have to give it to continue. F, Google!

They probably checked how much the prices for storage grew in the last year and said, "5GB is more than enough."

One annoying downgrade is that you cannot use it to share with people larger files giving them a link to your Gdrive, now.

Having used OneDrive, iCloud, and Google drive at work, Google drive is by far the least painful.

Although for home I have proton drive now.

You can turn that off.

Nothing shocking about cash transactions. Plus, don't they have a weird system where u can't make an account with cash? Or was that Bitcoin.

Anyways, cash transactions are the norm. CC is abnormal, even if it's more widespread. Protons competition also offer cash, but with no strings attached.

We've let these companies normalize regression of advancement and technology and prices and we're going back in time and everyone thinks it's OK.

Yes, I remember that too; they also said that you would NEVER have to delete an email again.

I noticed that Gmail says often enough that you need to free up space, that your Google space is almost full; pretty contradictory.
