GPU Availability and Pricing Update: September 2021

It's about time to ban gaming. I'm not against video games in general but what good does gaming do? Nothing, it's an inherently selfish activity involving self-gratification. Old consoles are environmentally destructive e-waste that destroys the planet and wastes rare earths.

The axe that beheads the goose will come for the gander soon enough.
Masturbation is also self-gratification, or drinking alcohol, or eating ice-cream and a lot of other human activities. Crypto-mining is also selfish and self-gratification, according to the definition of self-gratification. Your comment is also self-gratification (of the sexual kind).

You can blame it on crypto all you want and that's partially true, but dont ignore that Trump and Bidens massive stimulus made the US dollar (even more) TP than it already was. Prices are reset at new sky highs on everything, contrary to what the lying feds will say publicly. Try buying a house, or a car (avg new car price hit $41k), or hell groceries right now. Prices are at new highs for everything and I for one rather doubt this is anything but "the new normal".

I'm old I remember when $99 was the "mass market" target price for consoles, and a "mid range" GPU price range was ~$200. Now mid range GPU new normal is literally $1000 (and you're still going to get less VRAM than my 3 yr old phone if it's an Nvidia card), and mass market console is 499 arguably. Again, your money is made out of paper, dont forget it.

When I was a kid my mom told me when she was a kid candy bars where 5 cents. I was amazed because candy bars were ~35 cents at the time (often 3 for $1). Last time I was at the gas station my candy bar was $1.72. Granted it may have been king size I dont recall. For that matter I remember .87 gas.
Some of our money is made of plastic (literally) and you are right, the prices of everything, but especially gas and electricity are raising exponentially, at least in Europe. Right now they have doubled and keep rising after a so-called "liberalization" of the market, a free-for-all for energy corporations to raise the prices as much as they want, forcing many European governments to intervene to cap the prices, fearing the future violent reaction of the population. Interventionism weeks after liberalization :)

More like if gamers use their gpu to mine which is fine, but greedy miners using endless energy to the point to causing inflation across the board not only in graphics cards but in, hard drives, energy prices by flocking to low energy price locations like upstate NY causing prices to skyrocket as well as buying Energy plants outright. What is the ending of greed? There is no end to greed! Cryptomining is causing inflation exponentially.
The question still remains are crypto currencies quantum encrypted? If not what are people putting there futures in?
How about The Guy? Maybe he can end fatso Greed. ;)

I think there is another big player out there that is and will be influencing the prices of graphics cards: game streaming services (as a concept, to excuse my usage of the singular form).

This is one of the silliest and uninformed comments that I've ever read on any tech site. Sorry, bro.
As usual, the response to my posts is just to say "lol dumb" without addressing any of the arguments I made.

Stay classy, gamers.

I'm happy to address your "Arguments":

Statements such as "It's about time to ban gaming", and "it's an inherently selfish activity involving self-gratification" are self-explanatory; they are bogus at best, moronic at worst. Keep it REAL bud. No one is giving up gaming.

Got anything else?

Why are you here? Clearly you are not into tech or gaming. Do you think you're going to sway anyone's opinions based on those uninformed comments? SMH

Techspot moderators are really aggressive about banning trolls. Let's see if you can rethink your approach and give some meaningful and (at least) moderately thought-out responses.

It is NOT really the Crypto Miner's fault. It is a lack of capacity in the chip manufacturing world that was not ready to deal with increased demand caused by all the remote work during COVID, not for just GPUs, but overall. You could even blame Crypto Miners for car chip shortages too if you wanted to.

The reality is the industry wasn't ready for COVID... early on some manufactures thought COVID (looking at automotive and computer manufacturers) would slow demand so they CANCELLED or REDUCED their orders with the chip manufacturers... other industries stepped in and reserved all the extra capacity.

Linus explains it well:

I wanted to say one more thing but figured id put it in another post.

The biggest problem with crypto is power consumption. I honestly think its a missed opportunity. Legislators should require large-scale mining operations to use renewables and invest in building new ones if necessary. They can afford to pay a higher rate and still be profitable and because its continuous consumption they could even use it to offset nuclear during the day (since current nuclear can't be "turned off" when solar or wind are producing its more difficult to merge the different generation sources).

I find it interesting that the press jumps on "Crypto Energy Waist"... but then forgets to mention how much power the "regular" banking industry consumes:

https://techcrunch.com/2021/03/21/the-debate-about-cryptocurrency-and-energy-consumption/

"On the other side of the debate, research by ARK Investment Management found the Bitcoin ecosystem consumes less than 10% of the energy required for the traditional banking system."

https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/new...ryptocurrency-mining-report-shows/ar-BB1gPJkC

"Recent research suggests that the traditional financial system consumes much more energy than Bitcoin"

Question, if the research is done by crypto holders wouldn't that research be considered conflict of interest or bias? Ark investment owns almost 1 billion dollars worth of crypto.

I've said this many times.....

This is being done on purpose by CCP, using their ports to cause massive delays (3-6 months) on shipping containers... and claiming it COVID related. The rare earth metal that are in shortage, are sitting in containers, so that CCP can manipulate cost. Everyone afraid to investigate, just like in wuhan.

Last year, Dr Lisa Su -AND- Jensen Huang (along with others) penned a letter to the United States, in seeking new chip fab in USA, due to "unforeseen relationship" challenges and hoarding stockpiles of materials.

ie: OEM's are being strong armed by CCP.

No I don’t agree. Miners are just as entitled to mine as gamers are to play games. Actually I would say miners needs are more important. Income is more important than games.

Also, cryptocurrency doesn’t cause inflation. Inflation causes cryptocurrency to grow. If you didn’t want people pouring money into cryptos then you should be annoyed with governments for printing money during the pandemic.
I think your comments are valid.

Yet, I might argue that gaming IS as important as income during a pandemic; it surely serves as an outlet that may prevent some people from acting out on others by satisfying their angry, frustrated, hopeless tendencies in a non-violent and virtual way.

It really is satisfying to kill bad guys in a game, so don't sell it's merits so short!

I don’t like this idea of “blame” for the miners. They have if anything a more valid reason to own a GPU than a gamer does. Making money is more important than playing games. They could say “blame gamers” when looking for cards. It doesn’t get us anywhere.

Also if you want a 6600XT, come to the U.K. they are the only modern card in stock at MSRP (or maybe 10% above it).

But if you want a 3060 expect to pay about double it’s MSRP and wait for it (who are these lunatics!?). Actually I’ve seen 3080ti going for close ish to MSRP. That’s it though. 3070 and 3080s are hugely marked up.

This whole situation isn’t going to change for a while, PC gaming is for the wealthy only for the foreseeable.

"Making money", yeah, and what percentage are they contributing to the global economy? And you say crypto miners deserve it more, well why don't they buy the GPUs made specificlly for mining? They're wasting a card for only their own good, everything crypto miners do, ruin the environment aswell as, have destroyed gaming for so many people. I bought a computer on January of 2021, after almost 14 years without another single PC purchase, and this situation. I miss games. :'(

I miss games too, I also need a GPU. But I can’t see any logical reasoning that playing games is more important than making money.

You say they waste the card for their own good. That’s exactly what gamers do too. Gamers also are ruining the environment and gamers tend to overvolt and overclock whereas miners will be far more efficiency conscious.

It’s easy to hate miners because you want a gaming card. But don’t stoop down to that, its petty and makes PC gamers look like disgusting human beings. Besides a lot of gamers are miners too.

Noticed how introduction of "cheap renewable energy" increases the prices of energy, and it never starts paying off? Maybe we should return to the old fashion expensive energy. It's much cheaper.

Who owns the media?
What system do we live in?

Regarding the price of graphics cards.
There is no shortage of microchips, brass, etc. at all. Especially since everything now belongs to a few multinationals (mines, media, etc.).
There is no such thing as forgetting countries. It is the multinationals that control the planet.

And the tendency of the countries is to do as in the United States of America: to return everything to the "private" and to leave all the expenses of the "private" to the population, the public.

And of course, to always make more profits, the only goal of the capitalist whom the rich have renamed, they love to hide things, "democracy".

It is not surprising then to see the profits of multinationals reaching record highs year after year. And that will never change because for humans’ money is divine and the rich are Gods.

It was like this millennia ago.

Probably 95-99% of all the money made is in tax havens and will stay there forever. All this to satisfy one of the greatest human mental illnesses: Greed.

The miser can never have enough money. They would have the whole Universe they want others.
And the people revere them because they are their Gods.
The richer we are, the more people love us. The less we are rich the more people **** on us, hate us.

And it is the stingers who have, who control and will control the Earth forever. Well, as long as humans exist. It seems that most humans have no personality, let alone critical thinking. Besides, now to criticize is to be a Terrorist (intellectual), a communist, a fascist, a troll, etc.

All humans are liars on different levels and for different reasons, and the vast majority adore liars and lies.

Public "opinion" has never existed because it is the media, all owned by multinationals, that publish what they want.

The rich are magicians. With $ 1 they make 1 million, 1 billion, etc.
And people find it quite wonderful. No one wonders what happens to selling a product worth $ 1 selling it $ 1000. And if that is good for the population.
Thinking is not part of the vast majority of human brains and besides one wonders why they are so "big". A pinhead would suffice for human "thought".

The rich have no shortage of puppets: politicians, "journalists", etc.

With the latter they publish all their propaganda every second.
For example, to make 5000% profit instead of "only" 1000% they do not hesitate to broadcast: "this is the shortage", "this is the crisis", "these are the scalpers", etc.

And the people, the "journalists" repeat all this like parrots. No one checks and it will never happen since it is the rich who are spreading their lies.
And in order to have investigations, you must have authorizations. Only the rich have the power to give them away.

Everything is good to make a profit knowing that the people will believe all the propaganda disseminated globally and uniformly on Earth. It's like taking big **** and distributing it over a big balloon evenly.

And it works great and more since the invention of computers and the internet.
Just as these technologies have benefited the rich more than ever.
Moreover, the real goal of technologies, paid for by the people, is to make the rich richer, to ensure that they live in absolute comfort, that they have free access (it is the people who always pay ) to ever more efficient health care, better education, etc.

This is why everything is in the "private" because the rich especially do not want the people to have these advantages even if they are the ones who pay for everything.

It is enough only to apply "bread and games" and "divide and conquer" to subject the people to any stupidity.

By making public “schools” into big day care centers, we are certain that the people will continue to act as they do now.

Education, Health, Houses (castles, estates, etc.). Food is for the rich.
The people are happy to watch programs that are always crazier than each other on TV or on their divine smartphone.

Besides, if "TV is the opium of the people", their smartphone is their heroine.

It would be surprising to see the graphics cards down when you see all the profits (which are nothing but theft - selling a product or service more expensive than it is worth; capitalist principle) that multinationals are making now.

The Capitalist loves monopolies

More profits that go directly to tax havens.
Of course, we keep the population alive, we now have all their medical files on "government" (multinational "computers - not those of the rich of course.

Miners are ruining everything since this effing stuff started. It's not just gamers, there is a lot of people who need gaming GPUs to work: graphics industry, videomaking, 3d rendering, etc. The NVIDIA Quadro or AMD Radeon Pro these days don't show much difference (except for the price tag) to gaming cards, for the said reason it's quite normal for those who work with graphics to acquire gaming cards to work... and guess what? Now is nowhere near a chance to get a reasonably priced card because the jerk next door considers it "cool" to mine crypto coins like there's no tomorrow.
Both NVIDIA and AMD have turned the eye from this situation, and you need to invest like 3.5k dollars to get your hands on an RTX 3080Ti or RTX 3090 if you don't live in the US. It's just insane.

I dont agree with "not liking the blame the miners". I mean, tell me how many cards does a gamer need? probably one right? now I don't think you can count on your fingers how many cards a miner uses. They are using ridiculous amounts of cards.

I don’t like this idea of “blame” for the miners.

lol I love the idea that miners are feeling rough about the criticism to their actions.
Sure, people can do whatever they like with their hardware, but don't spare feelings for real reality. Who's at fault for the state of the current GPU market? It's crypto miners. The market would not be this way without their influence. It is entirely their fault, they are to blame. If they can't handle the press then they should pick a different market.

Are miners feeling rough? Last I checked they didn’t care.

Also, I wouldn’t say this is exclusively down to miners. Gaming has exploded in popularity aswell.

ok listen all a gamer needs is 1 gpu ONE not 50, miners are buying them all. I have seen in person many mining rigs its not 1 gpu so get your old *** out of here lets say u have 1 rtx 3090 and u are mining with it it is a very powerful gpu but u will make like 3 to 5 bucks a day ok now lets say I have 30 or 40 or more in a rig well you do the math like I said it only takes one for a gamer to use but it takes more than one to have a mining rig unless u want 5 dollars a day so yes blame the miners I dont care what u say that is the reason why they are soo high because people are to lazy and stupid to get a job they just sit in there basement mining bitcoin

But are these miners purchasing the 3090, and the actual good gpus? Or just cards like the 1050, which are cheaper and still profitable. I've done mining for almost 2 years now and I have 5 1050s specifically for mining, and it's worked great idk a ton on the difference between gpus for mining but why would I drop almost 3k on one unless it was proportionally profitable? I do get your point though.
