In brief: Helldivers 2 officially launched exactly two months ago on February 8, and it has already become a smash hit for Sony. According to a report by IDG consulting, the game's daily active user (DAUs) numbers on Steam are comparable to those of popular major releases like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II and Apex Legends.

Helldivers 2 garnered millions of players on Steam and PlayStation within just 30 days of launch, states the report. While there are no exact numbers, it revealed that they are only slightly lower than what CoD achieved on Steam, Xbox and PlayStation, and much more than what games like Apex Legends and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League got during their first 30 days on the market.

IDG also noted that Helldivers 2 is a hit with the reviewers, notching up a Metacritic score of 82 out of 100, which is much higher than the likes of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League (60) and Payday 3 (66). For reference, Apex Legends has a Metacritic score of 89, while Modern Warfare II has a score of 75.

To get anywhere near the DAU numbers of Modern Warfare II and Apex Legends is quite an achievement, given that the former is one of the most successful games in recent years, while the latter also has a sizeable fanbase. Both games routinely get more than 150,000 concurrent players on Steam each day, but while Modern Warfare II has an all-time record of nearly 500,000, Apex Legends hit over 600,000 during February and March 2023.

Helldivers 2 matching the DAUs of wildly-popular titles like CoD and Apex Legends is remarkable due to a number of reasons. First off, it is a paid game costing $40 a pop, while Apex Legends is free-to-play. In addition, CoD is available on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation, while Helldivers 2 is only available on PC and PS5.

Moreover, Helldivers 2 faced a myriad of challenges since its launch, including massive server bottlenecks during the first few weeks. Arrowhead has since raised the server cap from 450,000 to 700,000 concurrent users, although they continue to reach capacity during peak times. To further ease the load during these periods, the game has implemented an auto-kick functionality that boots anyone who remains idle for 15 minutes, freeing up space for waiting players.

I've had zero issues getting into the game ever since they setup the auto kick for idle people.

From the most recent update they pushed out I have had a lot of crashes to the desktop. These crashes were not happening for me before the latest update, so something they added/changed/removed/fixed is causing a lot of crashes.

I tend to mostly play when my brother is available, we team up and work with anyone else that wants to join us. The other night we had a guy that was freely dropping stratagems and doing a bit of teamkilling in the process. So my brother and I started taking potshots at him from long distances away with EATs or the new quasar cannon. Then we all started trying to drop in and crush each other when we were getting reinforced or we'd try to setup turrets in stupid places to skillfully take each other out when doing defend missions. Lots of laughs.

The game isn't serious and you can't take it seriously. Play for fun, have some laughs, do some stupid team kills (accidently, right....right?) and find dumb ways to die. All in all, the action, combat and stupid ways to die make the game a ton of fun.

One of the first games in a long time that gets you hooked. I've put in over 100 hours already and still haven't gotten tired of it.

They need to fix the crashing issues, but other than that, the amount of new content they've pushed out already is impressive, especially for a game thats only 2 months old.

There's a reason why for all intents and purposes the Xbox is a dead console. Outside of that ecosystem literally nobody cares about it, developers included.

I’m actually a little sad to see the state of Xbox in it’s current form, original Xbox was incredible, 360, superb.

I would like a reason to buy a Series X, Microsoft just hasn’t given me one…

As well as being a pop-up on my windows 11 launch screen multiplied by all up to date PCs in terms of sheer marketing for Call of duty.

I've literally never seen a popup or ad on my w11 login screen, is this a setting or something?

I Don't think so. I would opt out if I had the chance. Maybe I have to do some tinkering. I'll take a photo on my next day off and post it here.

I found one on the web that matches my login message. I am also logged in into the Microsoft store.
