Forward-looking: According to research firm IHS Markit, shipments of 8K TVs will reach 430,000 this year and surpass more than two million by the end of 2020. A set with an integrated 5G modem could exponentially increase sales, assuming of course that the price is right.

Chinese technology giant Huawei is reportedly looking to enter the cutthroat television market. Sources familiar with the company’s plans tell Nikkei Asian Review that its first set will feature an 8K resolution and a 5G wireless module.

The idea is that users will be able to tap into speedy 5G networks to download data-heavy content – perhaps faster than they could over their home broadband network – and without saturating their wired connection.

A 5G-equipped television could also serve as a router for other devices in your home, potentially eliminating the need for traditional Internet service entirely.

Huawei may not have the shiniest of reputations in the US due to privacy concerns but there’s no denying the company’s status as a global powerhouse and could be an early frontrunner in the 5G space. In the first quarter, Huawei overtook Apple to capture second place worldwide in terms of unit market share.

Huawei will enter a market dominated by Samsung, the world’s largest TV maker. The Korean tech titan recently started selling 8K sets in sizes ranging from 65 inches up to 98 inches.

#1 I'll probably NEVER buy anything from Hua Wei.

#2 I will not pay anything extra for a cellular modem on a TV. My Fios ethernet link is more than enough for my Smart TVs.

all I watch is Youtube anyway.

I presume that the bandwidth needed for 4k HDR, 18 to 25 Mbps, will be quadrupled for 8k. Does anyone actually believe that wireless carriers are going to allow unlimited downloads where 25-GB of data is used in one hour?. I sure don't believe that will happen, ever.

Why would they integrate cell service as mandatory in their TVs... gee I wonder, so you can't disable it? Look for all manufacturers to add it. I almost bought a new TV, but found the models I wanted had microphones and cameras. I never bought a TV. I guess I will never again buy a TV if they force cell service on us.

Need an example? CPAP machines upload your data without your knowledge.

Now all we need is some 8k content. Or, indeed, any significant amount of 4k content. Good for getting the best out of your digital photos I suppose ...

Good it will push others companies and I'm a bottom feeder that relies on best bang for buck and 4K and other products will trickle down quickly as mainstream at great prices.

The only good thing about it is that it will cause competitors to come up with their own, which in the long run will be great for us and not so for them ......

Eureka! An TV with AI based algorithm to deduce the natural physique of hominids in real time.
Or simply AI based Nude Mode! Turn on TV, go to channel of your choice and switch nude mode on. Should sell like hot cakes!
Joking aside, a TV to make porn better would sell really well.
