Linux from pendrive or HDD?

Which one will boot and work faster if I install it on my laptop or run it from a pendrive. I was thinking since Windows boot pretty fast from a SSD so would the pendrive be faster?

I find a first class fast flash drive is close to the speed of the slower laptop HDDs. An SSD would be faster than either.
