Modder adds over an hour of Switch 2 runtime by dropping in a bigger battery pack

In a nutshell: The Nintendo Switch 2 debuted earlier this year to a warm reception from both reviewers and gamers. However, battery life remains one of its few weaknesses, a limitation carried over from the first-generation model. A modder has now attempted to address this issue by increasing the Switch 2's battery capacity from 5,220 mAh to 8,000 mAh.

The mod comes courtesy of YouTuber Naga, who pried open a Switch 2 and installed a larger 8,000 mAh battery in place of the factory-fitted 5,220 mAh unit. To the amusement of many social media users, he even used a pair of metal-cutting scissors to saw off a sizable portion of an internal metal frame to make room for the larger battery.

Subsequent tests conducted by Naga showed that the upgraded device offered roughly an extra hour of usage compared to the stock model. For instance, battery life in Cyberpunk 2077 (40 Hz mode) increased from two hours and 18 minutes with the stock battery to three hours and 25 minutes with the new unit.

Replacement batteries for the Switch 2 are available on Chinese e-commerce platforms such as SuperBuy and Goofish, priced between $20 and $50 depending on quality and capacity. DIY enthusiasts willing to modify their console can purchase one of these units and potentially gain an extra hour of gameplay.

It's important to note that opening the back cover and tinkering with the hardware will void your warranty. For most mainstream users, investing in a large external power pack is a safer way to extend battery life. Nintendo could also release an official upgraded model with a larger battery and an OLED screen in the future, similar to what it did with the first-generation console.

The Switch 2 is already a significant upgrade over both the original model and the Switch OLED, featuring a faster processor, improved display, and higher storage options. The new console boasts a 1080p, 120 Hz LCD screen with variable refresh rate, built-in voice chat, and magnetic Joy-Cons, although it is slightly heavier and has thicker bezels to accommodate the new technology.

Might be worth trying when it’s out of warranty. Only thing that deterred me from this mod is the cutting. The shielding also acts as a heat spread. I recalled there’s thermal compound in contact with the aluminium shielding. So while we improve battery life, I think it may impact cooling to some extent.

Y'all realize putting in a bigger battery to replace a smaller one, isn't exactly rocket surgery, dontcha?

"If hand held gaming be the folly of nerds, twiddle on"

It’s not, but it also shows that Nintendo could have crammed in a bigger battery, but chose not to. Weight may be one of the reasons, but they could have allowed the console to run faster or longer with a bigger battery.

"By popular demand". This attaches to laptops as well. People whimper about devices being too thick and too heavy. So manufacturers give them thin devices. But it seems after they do, then people whimper about battery life and replaceability. After which lawsuits arise, with device owners having to sue, so that they can even replace the battery themselves. I know it's harsh to say, and difficult to believe, but maybe y'all brought this on yourselves.

More and more schools are reporting falling academic achievement standards. More and more schools are confiscating cell phones.

IMO, hand held gaming devices are the penultimate stage before complete, irreversible, gaming or device addiction.

So, where do you go from here? How to you feed your growing habit? That's easy to predict. You have a completely self driving electric car, with an onboard gaming PC strong enough to run VR goggles.

A quick Google search reveals:

American education issues have reached a tipping point. Across the country, students are struggling, and the cracks in our public education system are widening. Reading and math scores are at their lowest levels in decades. Chronic absenteeism is rising.

I'm certain this has absolutely nothing to do with cell phones, algorithms on social media sites being designed to be addictive, and certainly nothing to do with handheld gaming devices. Just as I'm sure that violent rap music has absolutely nothing to do with 13 years olds gunning down one another in the streets. But then again, I suppose it depends on who you ask.

But hey, what do I know? I'm really old and out of touch, or just jealous because I don't own a Switch. (with a bigger battery).
